Duane Allan Pullen, 84, of Creston, passed away Aug. 9, 2023, after a short illness. Mass of Christian Burial will 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. Father Patrick Amedeka will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Open visitation, with family receiving friends, will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Duane A. Pullen was born Oct. 19, 1938, son of Mary Alice (Hargan) Pullen and Alton Eugene (Curley) Pullen in Creston. Duane’s parents were living in Villisca, at the time. Duane moved to Creston with his parents and sister when he was about 10. He graduated from Creston High School in 1956.

On Feb. 27, 1960, Duane married Angela R. Lahey at the St. Johns Catholic Church in Greenfield. They had been married 63 years at the time of his death.

Duane spent 42 years with Iowa Department of Transportation as a construction project manager, working out of the Creston construction office. After retirement in March of 2000, Duane worked for an income tax firm, H & R Block, managing the Corning office for one tax season and then worked off and on as an on-site representative for an Omaha architectural firm at various school districts during the construction and remodeling of several area schools. Duane also served Waltz Construction for many years, helping with some design work and record keeping.

He was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Creston Elks Lodge. He was Exalted Ruler for the 1998-1999 lodge year.

Duane is survived by his wife Angela Pullen; two sons: Greg Pullen of Birmingham, Alabama, and Richard (Jackie) Pullen of West Des Moines; four grandchildren: Travis (Lacey) Pullen of Birmingham, Joel (Jennifer) Pullen of Johnston, Sheena (Trent) Jones of Birmingham and Jeff (Lisa) Pullen of Waukee; two great-grandchildren: Kyliegh Self and Charlie Pullen; one sister, Sharon (Dick) Montgomery of Urbandale; three sisters-in-law: Shirley and Deloris Lahey of Greenfield and Joyce Lahey of Granger; along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-in-law, Kim (Davenport) Pullen; an infant grandson Trenton; brothers-in-law: Tub, Leo, Jim, Jack and Bob Lahey, and four sisters-in-law: Helen, Mary, Ann and Kathy.

Duane’s family will be forever grateful for the kindness, caring and comfort provided by the teams at Unity Point, Arbor Springs, Holland Farms and Suncrest Hospice during his last year, and the love and support of his friends and neighbors in Creston. God’s peace to you, Duane.
