Remember when...

Maybe you were there when it happened or read about it the first time around, but some things are just worth repeating.

Two years ago (2024)

Creston Community High School FFA member and senior Tucker Rohrig has yet another chapter in his FFA career. He was elected to the Iowa FFA state officer team during the state FFA convention last week in Ames. He will commit the next year serving the Iowa FFA Association as the south central vice president for the state and president of the district.

Greater Regional Health board Monday approved a total of $158,058 for expansion of parking along Country Club Drive. TK Concrete of Pella had the lowest bid for concrete, which was approved at $130,531. Their bid was the lowest and one of five with the highest bid at $174,085.

The Creston boys soccer team has had a successful week, winning two of their four games. Their losses came to undefeated Hawkeye 10 leader Lewis Central and 6-2 Treynor. The 3-7 Panthers have found ways to win. Though they are down five or six starters from a year ago, the team is only one win away from their win total last season.

12 years ago (2014)

The Creston/Orient-Macksburg golf teams picked up a sweep of Glenwood on Monday, with the boys posting a 158-188 win at home, while the girls won 216-274 at Glenwood. The Panther boys displayed their depth in the win, as the Creston/O-M JV team also posted a lower team score than Glenwood’s varsity with a score of 175. Senior Hunter Sickels won medalist honors for the Panthers, shooting a round of 1-under par 35.

The Creston boys soccer team started off a busy week with a 3-1 victory over Atlantic Monday night. The Panthers improved to 2-1 in the Hawkeye 10 and 8-1 overall, possibly headed toward its first state ranking of the season on Wednesday’s release by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. Atlantic fell to 1-2 in league play and 4-6 overall.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources will release four Trumpeter Swans at Summit Lake 10 a.m. May 9, rain or shine.

The Creston/O-M girls tennis team is in a virtual tie for first place in the Hawkeye 10 dual standings after Monday’s 6-3 win at Glenwood. The Panthers won four of six singles matches and two of the three doubles contests to improve to 3-0 in the Hawkeye 10 and overall. Glenwood fell to 2-3 and 2-3. Red Oak is atop the league at 4-0, with a 5-0 overall mark.

16 years ago (2010)

A local company will coordinate Southwestern Community College’s conversion of its cafeteria to a food-court style dining area. A bid of $330,530 from Winterstien Construction of Creston was approved by the college’s board of directors Thursday. It included a base bid of $308,640, and an alternate to repair duct work above the cafeteria for $21,890.

The Creston Panthers boys soccer team is continuing to show they’re a force in the Hawkeye 10. With their 5-2 defeat of the Atlantic Trojans Monday night, they extend their winning streak to six and their overall record to 8-1. Seth Pals was the first to score but the Panthers soon found themselves tied again at 1-1 after Creston scored the goal for the Trojans. Pals added two more goals to round out the first half and put his team up 3-1

20 years ago (2006)

It was 50 years ago that the late Bill Sears started his Peewee (ages 9-11) and Midget (ages 12-14) all-star teams in Creston. Sears, a Greenfield native, had played football at Simpson College and when he landed in Creston working at a dry cleaning plant, he helped get youth baseball off the ground.

For 30 years Southern Iowa Regional Housing Authority has operated with little fanfare, quietly providing rent assistance for low-income families and working with landlords to supply safe, affordable housing in the community. Cathy Seddon, director of SIRHA since 1995, said there is still a need for low-income housing.

One night after blowing out Atlantic’s first-year team, 8-1, the Panthers returned home to defeat Clarinda Academy, 10-2, before a sparse crowd huddled mostly in vehicles along the fence. Players, coaches and officials battled through the difficult conditions and, considering the playing conditions, some quality soccer was on display.
