Area football recap (Sept. 1 games)

Lenox quarterback Gabe Funk sprints 64-yards to the end zone in the first minute of the 3rd quarter in Friday night's win over Fremont-Mills.  Funk rushed for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns and also completed 8 passes for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns.

East Union v. Lamoni

The Eagles (2-0) stay undefeated as they shut out Lamoni 38-0 Friday at home.

East Union held the Demons (1-1) to 110 all-purpose yards and only 3 passing yards. Senior Austin Lack led the Eagles on defense with 10 tackles including two tackles for loss. Paul McNeill and Haydn Walters each came down with interceptions.

Neither team held much momentum in the first half with the Eagles putting up the only score in the second quarter to lead 8-0 at the half.

The third quarter flipped a switch for East Union where they broke away for 24 points to open up for a four-score lead. Lack also led the team in rushing touchdowns with two. Terrian Islas and Seth Hudson each added one for a total of four Eagles rushing touchdowns. Rason Grail caught the team’s only passing touchdown.

Fischer Buffington had 82 yards rushing to lead the team. East Union, Bedford and Lenox lead the 8-man district 8 with two wins each.

The Eagles return to action Friday in a district matchup at Southeast Warren (1-1).

Mount Ayr v. Wayne

The Raiders (2-0) came away with a 42-0 shut out Friday against Wayne including three interceptions by sophomore quarterback/defensive back Jackson Ruggles.

Wayne had only two first downs on the night while Mount Ayr logged 16.

Junior Tyler Martin dominated on offense, putting up the first two scores of the game in 3-yard and 4-yard rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. After a 33-yard Ruggles to Dyson Thompson touchdown, Martin caught the 2-point conversion. This was followed with two more Martin rushing touchdowns (2-yards and 6-yards), a successful point-after kick and another 2-point conversion both by Martin.

Thompson scored the final touchdown on a 21-yard rush. Thompson logged 73 yards on nine rushes and 63 yards on four catches for 136 all-purpose yards. Tate Dugan led rushing stats with 112 yards on 31 carries.

Mount Ayr, Madrid and Lynnville-Sully lead Class A district 6 with two wins each. Mount Ayr hosts Madrid Friday.

Lenox v. Fremont-Mills

In a comeback victory, the Tigers (2-0) win their third straight against the rival Knights (0-2).

Fremont-Mills wasted no time, going up two scores on Lenox in the first quarter. Used to battling through adversity, the Tigers pushed on to score 16 in the second quarter and take the 16-14 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw an offensive explosion from the Tigers — scoring 28 to take a 30-point lead on the Knights.

Junior quarterback Gabe Funk posted a stellar performance on all sides of the ball logging 8-16 for 132 yards and two passing touchdowns, 125 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns and 9.5 tackles including one tackle for loss.

Dawson Evans had a pick-6 and a fumble recovery in the Tigers’ bid to turn the game around. Jordan-Martin England led the team in rushing yards with 126 and also had 9.5 tackles.

The Tigers face 8-man district 8 rivals Bedford (2-0) on the road Friday.

Murray v. Bedford

An offensive first quarter by the Bulldogs (2-0) including 151 yards and eight first downs led to a resounding 71-20 victory over the Murray Mustangs (1-2).

Bedford’s Silas Watson found the first touchdown and Murray responded, Nolan Gannon scoring on a 3-yard run only two minutes later.

From there, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered touchdowns to open the lead 36-6. Murray had 10 total first downs in the matchup.

“We were proud of the way our kids competed against a really good Bedford team,” Murray Coach Shawn Oaks said. “We played more physical than we had the first two weeks. Bedford has 29 experienced upperclassmen and will be in a battle for the district title.”

Murray quarterback Caden Page completed 11-21 for 147 yards including one touchdown and one interception. The Mustangs’ defense held Bedford quarterback Connor Nally to 51 yards.

“We still have areas in which we can improve,” Oaks said. “Our upperclassmen are helping bring our young guys along. We will look for better execution in our run game over the next couple of weeks to complement our passing game.”

Murray hosts Twin Cedars (0-3) Friday for senior night.

Southwest Valley v. South Central Calhoun

Southwest Valley (1-1) suffered a 47-0 shut out Friday at home against South Central Calhoun(2-0).

The Titans’ 514 all-purpose yards was nearly five times that of the Timberwolves’ 117.

Titans senior quarterback Gavin Batta completed 11-18 for 206 yards and a passing touchdown as well as 24 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

Southwest Valley running back Isaac Currin had 50 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Evan Timmerman was held to three completions for 12 yards.

On defense, Bradlee Grantz led the Timberwolves with 6.5 total tackles.

The Timberwolves return to action Friday at Grandview Christian (2-0).
