It’s hard to understand why any president would want his administration to go down in history renowned for its stupidity. To deliberately appoint people to one’s cabinet who embrace theories and policies that are ridiculed by the world - today and in the history books later - makes no sense.
Trump appointed a cabinet of highly unqualified people. He seemed to go out of his way to select the worst people he could think of to run his administration, and unbelievably, the Republicans in the Senate confirmed every one of them
Many are predicting Kash Patel, who was selected as the director of the FBI, probably won’t be around much longer. That an unqualified, unprincipled individual was ever nominated for such a consequential position and won Senate approval is embarrassing.
It didn’t take long to recognize Pam Bondi had no idea what her role as attorney general was supposed to be. She ran the Department of Justice strictly for the benefit of the president who appointed her, not as the legal authority for the nation. Her extreme fealty was for naught, as she was fired by Trump anyway. Acting AG Todd Blanche also fails to comprehend he’s not supposed to be the president’s personal attorney anymore. A few days ago, news stories quoted Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. saying reports are “garbage” that disputes his theory Tylenol causes autism. Kennedy is secretary of Health and Human Services. He’s better known as a former heroin addict and current crackpot, who has all kinds of bizarre science and medical opinions despite being untrained as a scientist or a physician.
The Danish study he thinks should be retracted was peer reviewed before publishing. It was based on more than a million women’s medical records and no link was found between autism and using Tylenol during pregnancy. When Trump casually told pregnant women not to take Tylenol based on Kennedy’s claims, medical experts called it reckless and irresponsible.
Kennedy promised well over a year ago to identify the real cause of autism by September 2025. He’s presented no evidence and no studies are underway.
Kennedy has also angered medical experts for his recommendations on vaccines. A federal judge had to block his attempts to cut crucial vaccinations for babies and children, including those for rotavirus, flu, hepatitis A and B, RSV and meningitis.
Another cabinet secretary, Chris Wright, heads the Department of Energy in Trump’s administration. He just issued a report that goes against all current science about global warming. Scientists say the report is riddled with errors, cherry-picked data and makes a mockery of science, relying on outdated and discredited studies long ago rejected by scientific experts.
Recently when the president was speaking to a group in Arizona, he proclaimed, “the Earth is cooling.” A statement like that is in the same category as saying the earth is flat.
Trump calls regulations dealing with climate change and initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases “green scam.” His claim the earth is cooling followed a recent announcement that the month of March was the hottest on record, breaking U.S. temperature records for 132 years.
In their war on science, the administration has gutted all sorts of environmental protections and initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gases. They are dismantling a world-class climate and weather research institution in Colorado whose purpose was to better predict severe weather, droughts, wildfire behaviors and how solar storms impact earth.
So, what could possibly be the reason for this vendetta against green energy? Money, of course. Trump hates “windmills” because he thinks they spoil the looks off shore of his beautiful, expensive golf courses. He complains nonstop about how they kill birds and cause cancer, but that’s not why he’s against them.
Oil, gas and coal companies whose products emit much of the greenhouse gases impacting our environment spend billions influencing government officials to protect their business interests. They want us to continue depending on their fuel to travel and heat our homes. They want factories to continue using their coal. They really want their government subsidies to continue.
They contribute enormous amounts of money to Trump and Congress, thinking only about profit, not the future of the planet.
They must think their generation is the only one that matters. As long as the climate is still OK for them, to heck with the grandchildren.
