Melba Akers, 97, of Creston, died Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr.

Jack Bakerink, 84, of Creston, died Friday, May 1, 2026, at his home northeast of Creston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. Father Patrick Amedeka will officiate. A private burial with family will be held at a later date as Jack’s body will be donated to science per his wishes. Services will be livestreamed at a link under his obituary at www.powersfh.com. Visitation with family receiving friends was from 5- 7:30 p.m. Monday, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

John Clem “Jack” Bakerink was born Feb. 23, 1942, son of Arthur Herbert Bakerink and Lucretia Agnes “Tete” (Devereaux) Bakerink in Corning. As a child he attended country school Lincoln #5 then Creston School, before graduating in 1959 from Creston High School. He then went on to attend Southwestern Community College, earning his associate’s degree.

On Feb. 11, 1961, Jack was united in marriage to Frances Irene “Fran” Schroeder at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. From this union came three children: Teresa, John and Michelle. In 1962, the family moved to town and he began working for Wellman Dynamics. In 1992, they completed the building of their home on the outskirts of town and moved there. In 2000, Jack and Fran opened J&J Plumbing and Heating in Creston until their retirement in 2025.

Jack was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston, clerk of Lincoln Township and a member of the Creston Eagles Club #1398.

He is survived by his wife Fran Bakerink of Creston; his children: Teresa L. (Donald) Williamson of Creston, John Randall “Randy” (Lisa) Bakerink of Springfield, Missouri, and Michelle R. “Shelli” (Jeff) Burger of Afton; his sister Janet (Lowell) Pettit of Creston; two sisters-in-law, Cyndy Bakerink of Creston and Jan Custer of Indianola; brother-in-law Duane (Dee) Schroeder of Topeka, Kansas; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and many other extended family members.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Tete Bakerink; his sister Judy at birth; his brother Jim Bakerink; father- and mother-in-law, Hank and Mary Schroeder, along with his brother-in-law and spouse, Norman and Linda Schroeder.
