The East Union volleyball team advanced to the state tournament for the third time in school history with a win in Anita over Adair-Casey. Team members include: Jacklyn Bear, Katelin Hardisty, Eliza Driskill, Mariah Kruse, Cassi Songer, Stephanie Gilliam, Dusti Carlisle, Chelsey Madison, Shelby Smith, Amber Friend, Sara Pettit, Brittany Malone, Katie Rice, Tara Guion, Rochelle Means, Head Coach Gail Thatcher and Assistant Coach Naomi Sharp. East Union moves on to state for the first time since 1990. “It means everything. We’ve been working four years for this, and we finally earned it,” said Eagle senior Mariah Kruse. “As freshmen, we always wanted to go to state, and we finally made it.”
Darwin West was nominated and selected as the Creston Citizen of the Year by the Creston Chamber of Commerce committee. He was nominated because of all the hours he spends helping others. West and his business partner Tom Frey can be found auctioning donated items at benefits for people who need help for a medical crisis or various nonprofit groups in the community, fundraisers for groups, master of ceremonies for Creston High School prom – where he knows most of the kids by name – and he volunteers his time at the county fair’s Celebrity Steer Show as emcee and auctions pies, since he is a strong supporter of the 4-H and FFA.
Seniors honored at the Creston/Orient-Macksburg football banquet were Austin Bolinger, Will Reasoner, Nick Ray, Alec Paup, Jordan Hayes, Chase Blazek, Derek Pellman, Jordan Leach, Luke Eblen and Manager Melissa Lindley. Seniors honored for volleyball were Dana Gordon and Sarah Jennett.

Chuck Spindler, pastor of Crest Baptist Church since 1994, was named Outstanding Pastor of the Year for 2005 by the Baptist Convention of Iowa. The award is made annually to a pastor of an Iowa congregation who shows growth, commitment and diligence in leadership.
Dr. Robert Kuhl was selected as Citizen of the Year. Kuhl was active as a Creston School Board member, coached youth sports, was involved in numerous community groups, was a CHS Hall of Fame honorary member and he’s a busy surgeon. Marcella Howe was selected as Volunteer of the Year and is very involved in Union County Historical Society. Andy Jennett was picked as Youth of the Year and is an active student with a 4.0 grade point average, while busy with sports, band, FFA and college courses.

Larry Wynn, owner of F&M Body Shop, was back to work as usual after winning the election for Creston’s mayor. He replaces Terry Donahue who is leaving office after serving as mayor for 14 years. In other races, Steve Wintermute and Orville Lines, won the at large races, while Alvin “Red” Benson and Lora Pellman tied for the 4th Ward. Don Krings, Union County auditor, said the results would be canvassed, and if no changes were found, the two names would be put in a hat, and a drawing would determine the winner.
Creston High School’s “The Arrow” had a fall sports wrap-up. The cross country season ended at the district meet in Atlantic with the Pantherettes placing 11th and the Panthers 13th. The volleyball team ended its season with a win at Adel and an overall record of 8-16-1. The football team ended its regular season with a 8-1 record but a disappointing loss against Pella. Next up would be the first round of class 3A playoffs against Harlan.
