Wires places 4th in H10 tennis

Wesley Wires returns a volley during a match last week against Clarke. The Panther senior placed fourth in No. 2 singles Tuesday at the Hawkeye Ten tournament.

DENISON — Wesley Wires placed fourth in No. 2 singles to lead Creston at the Hawkeye Ten Conference boys tennis tournament Tuesday.

The Panthers finished ninth in the team race with nine points, ahead of Glenwood and Kuemper Catholic. Shenandoah, playing in its last Hawkeye Ten tournament, was team champion with 32 points, sweeping first place in both singles and both doubles divisions. Luke Daoust of Shenandoah topped Clarinda’s Creighton Bird for the No. 1 singles crown.

Wires, seeded 10th, won 8-6 in the opening round at No. 2 singles and won 8-4 over No. 2 seed Caden Herbst of Harlan in the quarterfinals before falling to Matt Holmes of Shenandoah, the division champion, 8-0 in the semifinals. Hayden Hash of Clarinda topped Wires 8-2 in the third-place match.

Other Creston placewinners besides Wires were Tim Bartlett, seventh in No. 1 singles, and the team of Dylan Dornack and C.T. Stalker, eighth in No. 1 doubles. Carson Beer and Malachi Webber were eliminated in the consolation round of No. 2 doubles.

“It was a perfect day to play tennis,” Creston coach Kevin Cooper said. “Throughout the day there were ups and downs and the kids had to work their way through it. Shenandoah proved how good they are by winning the tournament with a perfect score of 32.”

Cooper said multiple state qualifiers could come out of the No. 1 singles bracket, with Bartlett competing well and earning seventh place with a win in his final match. Wires was not seeded among the top four, but ended up fourth at No. 2 singles.

“Wesley had a great day for us,” Cooper said. “He won his first two matches and put himself in the semifinals at No. 2 singles. He was able to get a win over a player from Harlan who he had lost to last week.”

The doubles team of Dornack and Stalker also won their first match and a consolation match on their way to placing eighth.
