The daughter of a Creston High School Hall of Famer was part of a record-setting performance by the Waukee Northwest girls track and field team last weekend at the Drake Relays.
Sophomore Sadie McCann was part of four relays at Drake, with three of them setting new Iowa records and the fourth finishing a close runner-up. She is the daughter of Kyle and Maggie McCann.
Kyle was the scoring leader on Creston’s 1997 state championship basketball team and became the starting quarterback at the University of Iowa before beginning a career as an attorney. Maggie (Hall) was a member of the University of Iowa track team when Kyle was on the football team. She was a track star at Harlan, where she competed in the 100 meters, long jump and 4x400 relay at the Drake Relays.
The 4x400 was one of Sadie McCann’s winning events with teammates at Northwest last weekend. The foursome of McCann, Quinn Jorgensen, Avery Vogt and Logan Vogt set an Iowa all-time best in a time of 3:45.36. That same quartet ran on the second-place sprint medley Friday morning in a time of 1:44.92.
McCann joined Jorgensen, Katie Stahl and Katie Willits to win the 4x200 relay in 1:38.40, the fastest ever by an Iowa high school girls squad. In fact, Northwest holds Iowa’s top four times ever in the event.
Northwest’s quartet of McCann, Willits, Bella Distefano and Avery Vogt claimed the top preliminary time of 47.06, a new Iowa record that topped Northwest’s previous mark of 47.22 in 2024. The Wolves didn’t place in the finals with a dropped baton before the anchor leg.
Northwest also set a new Iowa record in winning the shuttle hurdle relay in 59.57, the first unit to run sub-60 seconds. Northwest also won the 4x800 in an Iowa record time of 8:58.03.
