CLARINDA — Creston, Lenox and Southwest Valley each had to experience a very wet, at times very windy with wind gusts over 30 mph and therefore a quite cold Lady Cardinal Relays on Tuesday.
Despite the conditions, Creston picked up a fifth place finish in 2A with 68 total points.
“I don’t think I’ve ever come to Clarinda where we haven’t had a little moisture in the air and a chill,” Creston head coach Maggie Arnold said. “Tonight was a great meet for us, I thought the girls competed really well.”
Creston’s field events shined Tuesday with Bri Fields finishing first in discus (105-08) and a second place finish in shot put (31-05.75).
“I think the highlight came in the throws,” Arnold said. “Those 18 team points right off the bat were crucial. We doubled up in both of those events.”
Taylor Seaton placed seventh with a shot put throw of a 25-05. Zoey Vandevender brought home fifth in the discus (73-11.50).
“Seaton, she’s a senior, she did her job and got us some points, as well as Vandevender in the discus,” Arnold said.
The Panthers had good results in the relays with a second place finish in the 4x100 (1:06.98) as well as a fifth place finish (1:05.48), a fourth place in the 4x200 (2:04.67) and a third place finish in the 4x400 (4:45.31).
In the 400 meter shuttle hurdle relay, Creston earned bronze medals with a time of 1:27.66.
In the medley relays, the Panthers picked up a pair of fifth place finishes with a 2:12.44 in the Sprint Medley Relay and a 5:17.77 in the Distance Medley Relay.
Fifth place finishes continued for the Panthers in the 100 meter dash as Aileen Villalpando (17.79) and Aaniah Haynes (15.26) each earned points in their respective heats.
Angelica Franco continued the trend in the 200 meter dash (36.22) and Panther teammate Karter Clayton finished in sixth.
Alyssa Gerdes scored a point in the 400 meter dash and Payton Davis scored two points in the 800 meter run.
Grace Travis, Gerdes and Emma Pantini added points to the Creston total in their respective hurdle events.
Next up
Creston is scheduled to make an appearance in central Iowa tomorrow to face off against Carroll, Forest City, Gilbert, Grand View Christian, Nevada (host) North Polk and Roland-Story.
“We’re supposed to be going to Nevada,” Arnold said. “We’ll see if we go, but that’s not looking very promising. After that, we’re at home for our meet Monday night (senior night).”

Another win for the Tigers came in the 4x400 relay with runners Sadie Cox, Gabby Robles, Brooklynn Ecklin and Zoey Reed.
“It’s our first time all running together and we got first so we think it went pretty well,” Ecklin, the lone senior on the quartet, said.
Sadie Cox, a freshman, found the event to be the highlight of the night.
“That was actually my favorite race all night,” Cox said. “We started out second but then Gabby got us close enough to pull ahead for first.”
Zoey Reed, another freshman on the winning relay found the entire race to be exciting.
“It was a great race from the top to the bottom,” Reed said. “Sadie came in clutch and it was a great, fun race.”
Gabby Robles, who is a sophomore, echoes Reed’s thoughts while having some of her own.
“I think we did pretty well,” Robles said. “I think we had a good time, Sadie came in clutch so yeah, it was great!”
