Harold Hytrek, 66, of Madrid, was taken into custody 7:46 p.m. April 28 on Interstate 80 for the charges of OWI, second offense; eluding; interference with official acts and carrying a weapon while intoxicated.

According to an Adair Police report, at approximately 4:55 p.m. officers located a Ram flatbed truck matching the description of a reported reckless driver westbound on Interstate 80. Officers observed the truck cross the center line and go into the shoulder of the lane, drive below the speed limit and then speed up to approximately 80 mph. A traffic stop was initiated near mile marker 76 but the truck did not yield.

Officers attempted to to get the truck to stop by driving next to the driver’s side of the truck and motioning the vehicle over, but the driver, later identified as Hytrek waived the officer on and continued driving. Officers were able to block in the vehicle near mile marker 60 and slowed it to a stop. While officers got out of their patrol vehicles Hytrek drove away again. Approximately a mile later the truck stopped again and officers approached it at gun point but Hytrek refused to exit the truck. When an officer attempted to reach in and grab the keys, Hytrek tried to put the truck back into drive. Officers grabbed Hytrek’s arm, opened the door of the truck, removed Hytrek, who was still noncompliant, from the truck and forced him to the ground to get handcuffs on him.

While attempting multiple times to get Hytrek into a patrol vehicle, the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Hytrek was detected. Hytrek was assisted into a patrol vehicle laying down, where he kicked the window repeatedly. Hytrek was observed to have bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech. He refused field sobriety testing. Cass County EMS arrived at the scene to transport Hytrek for an arm injury. Because Hytrek refused to get up, he had to be picked up and loaded onto a stretcher for transport. Once at the hospital, Hytrek was uncooperative with staff and refused all treatment.

After being released from the hospital, Hytrek was transported to the Adair County Jail where he was released from after posting $1,500 cash or surety bond.
