L. Darlene Bailiff, 89, a cherished member of the Adams County community and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at Corning Specialty Care in Corning. Born on December 29, 1936, at home east of Carbon, Darlene’s life was marked by devotion to family, community service and a graceful spirit that left an enduring impact on those who knew her.
Darlene’s early years were spent attending country schools in Adams County before graduating from Corning High School. Following her marriage to Richard Allan Bailiff, she embarked on a professional journey that began with five years of work in Chicago. The couple returned to Adams County where Darlene dedicated herself to serving her community. She took a position with the National Farmers Organization in Corning before embarking on a long and distinguished career as the Deputy Assessor for Adams County. Her commitment to public service was further exemplified through her many years serving on the board of directors for the Southern Iowa Regional Housing Authority.
In addition to her professional life, Darlene and her husband Richard owned and operated the “Clown Drive-In” for several years, a venture that brought joy and fond memories to their community. Together, they embraced a passion for travel, exploring all 50 states — including the far north of Alaska — as well as journeys to Canada and Mexico. While she had many adventures, Darlene harbored a wistful disappointment that she never visited New York City, a trip she had hoped to make.
Above all, Darlene’s proudest accomplishments were her family and the loving bonds she nurtured throughout her life. She is survived by her daughter, Wendi (Larry) Stedman of Corning; six grandchildren: Jesse Ray, Jackie (Wiley) Ziemer, Ashley McGinnis, Mark (Brianna) Colwell, Timothy Stedman and Tyler Stedman and seven great-grandchildren: Marcus, Masen, Douglas, Sophia, Ryker, Brayden and Makenzie. Their lives stand as a testament to her enduring love and guidance.
Darlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Bailiff, who passed away in 2020; her son Mark Bailiff; her brother Lyle Boham; and her parents, Harold William and Verda (Campbell) Boham.
A visitation to honor L. Darlene Bailiff was held on May 14 at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Corning. The visitation was open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with family receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The funeral service will follow on May 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the same location.
Darlene’s life was one of dedication, adventure and unwavering family love. She will be remembered with deep respect and affection by all whose lives she touched.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be determined at a later date.
