Darlene Helen (Mosby) Freeman, 95, passed away peacefully April 17, 2026, at the Lenox Care Center. She was born Oct. 18, 1930, to Ernest and Myrtle (Pinckney) Mosby at the Pinckney family home in Macksburg. She was the eldest of five children.
She attended country school through the eighth grade and then continued her education in Winterset through her junior year. Then her family moved to a farm north of Creston on Cherry Street Road, and she completed her senior year at Zion School. She went on to attend one year of junior college in Creston.
She met Harry Freeman on a blind date arranged through his cousin from Orient, despite always insisting she would “never” go on a blind date. Encouraged by her best friend, who described him as an “OK” guy, Darlene agreed to go, and the rest is history. She and Harry were married Nov. 27, 1949. The day after their wedding, they moved to a farm near Lenox that Harry eventually purchased from his uncle.
Though Darlene had also once said she would “never” marry a farmer, the two built a wonderful life together on the farm, where they lived for 62 years. They raised crops and livestock, tended a garden and Darlene devoted herself to raising their family. Together they were blessed with three children: Rosalie, Barbara and Gary. Their daughter Barbara died shortly after birth.
Darlene was a longtime member of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church where she also taught Sunday School. She was actively involved in her community as a Cub Scout and 4-H leader. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing bingo and cards. Harry and Darlene enjoyed going on numerous vacations with the family. Beginning at age 49, they started going to Texas in a pull-trailer for a few weeks each winter, eventually purchasing a lot and mobile home at the Royal Palms retirement park in Alamo, Texas. Together they spent many happy winters there and Darlene continued the tradition after Harry’s passing until she turned 90.
In 2012, Darlene moved into town and later became a resident of Vintage Park Assisted Living, where she enjoyed four wonderful years. She spent the final months of her life at the Lenox Care Center.
Darlene took great pride in her family, especially in having two sets of five living generations, one of which lives in Lenox.
She is survived by her children, Rosalie Graham and Gary (Barb) Freeman of Lenox; her grandchildren: David Graham of Florida, Lori (Chris) Comstock of Lenox, Jen (Mike) Neal of Kansas, Christy (Monty) Douglas of Lenox and Kurtis (Sarah) Freeman of Norwalk; her great-grandchildren: Annabelle Cohen, Ashlie (Shawn) Moran, Aaron (Kendra) Comstock, Paige and Peyton Moore, Camryn, Cadence, Kenzie and Liam Douglas and Myah and Avah Freeman; great-great-grandchildren: Brody, Brysen and Bristen Moran and Remi Trimble. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Eighme; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Mosby and Joann Mosby and seven nieces and nephews.
Darlene was preceded in death by her husband Harry Freeman; her daughter Barbara Freeman; her parents, Ernest and Myrtle Mosby; her sister Evelyn Mosby; her brothers, Robert and Andrew Mosby; her brother-in-law Dean Eighme and her niece Connie Oberly.
Darlene will be remembered for her strong spirit, her many stories, her dedication to her family and the life she built alongside those she loved.
