Joan Nyberg peacefully journeyed home to her Lord and Savior April 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving and caring family. Celebration of Life Services were held April 17, at Brown’s Funeral Home in Irving, Texas.
Memorials may be designated to the Texas Oncology Foundation, in care of Baylor Scott White Medical Center in Irving. Burial will be a later date in the National Military Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
Joan Elizabeth was the second daughter born to Anthony Francis Baker and Pauline Elizabeth (Thompson) Baker Aug. 1, 1949, in Creston. Joan received her education from St. Malachy School, Burton R. Jones Junior High and Creston High School where she graduated in May 1967. In her youth, Joan was involved in Brownie and Girl Scouts and swam the breaststroke for the Creston swimming team. In high school, she participated in chorus, Peppers, Girls Recreation Association and tennis.
Following graduation, Joan worked for Equitable of Iowa in Des Moines. During a night out with girlfriends in Des Moines, Joan met the love of her life, John Henry Nyberg. The couple married Jan. 29, 1972, at Immaculate Conception Church in Creston. To this union two daughters were born, Melissa Ann and Heather Marie.
The family moved to Irving, in 1979 for John’s work. In addition to being a wife and mother, Joan worked for various companies in Irving including McKesson Corporation as an executive assistant to top management for 22 years. She retired in June 2013 due to health reasons, culminating 46 years in the computer industry.
Throughout her life Joan’s priorities were her love for her family and her passion for landscaping their yard in Irving and their RV spot at Lake Fork in Texas. Traveling was enjoyed by Joan and John including cruises to the Bahamas and Cancun and long driving trips to Iowa to see family and friends.
Since 2013, Joan experienced health problems with Trans Global Amnesia, back surgery, broken arms, stroke, COPD and more recently esophageal cancer and brain tumor cancer. After brain surgery last August, Joan experienced problems resulting in several ICU stays, hospitalizations and rehab. She was under the loving care of Vitas Hospice since February, where she could be in the comfort of her home. The family thanks all the personnel of Vitas for their kind and compassionate care for Joan.
Joan was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents, Francis and Pauline Baker; her sister Martha Baker; niece Misty Elizabeth (O’Riley) West; parents-in-law, Henry and Eleanor Nyberg; brother-in-law David Nyberg; nephew Chris Nyberg; many other relatives and friends.
Joan is survived by her precious Maltese Murphy; her husband John; daughters, Melissa Nyberg and Heather Nyberg; grandchildren, Dylan Roberts and Averie Doyle, all of Irving; her sister Mary (Mark) O’Riley of Creston; two brothers, Mike (June) Baker of Creston and Joe (Jaycene) Baker of Altoona and Joan’s extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
