Shirley Thompson

Shirley Thompson, 91, of Afton, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Pastor Sheila Sutton will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery near Afton.

Shirley Edna Thompson was born March 19, 1932, daughter of Gordon Martin Thompson and Bertha A. (Knotts), in Afton. Shirley attended and graduated from Afton High School in 1950.

Shirley first began working and living in Des Moines when she was employed at American Mutual Insurance Association. She would come home every weekend to be with her parents in Afton. Shirley loved spending her time watching baseball and basketball. She was also quite the avid reader.

Shirley is survived by her nieces, Carol (Patrick) Lennon of Fort Dodge, Doris Perkins of Jefferson City, Tennessee. and Deborah Redmond, of Corryton, Tennessee; great-nieces: Stacey (Mike) Irvine of Waukee, Kelsie Van Gorkom of Ankeny, Mackenzie (Dylan) Vodraska of Fort Dodge, Sydney (Kent) Flynn and Samantha (Bryan) Knowles, both of Halls, Tennessee; special friends: Deb Brandt of Afton, Monte and Sherry Parrott of Afton, LeRayn Byers of West Des Moines, Marta Addo of Afton, Marta’s daughter, Amanda (Dylan) Harrison of Red Oak and 11 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Wayne Thompson; sister-in-law, Darleen Thompson and nephew, Mike Perkins.
