Larry Sweeney, 73, of Creston, passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston.

Larry Sweeney, 73, of Creston, passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 21, at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Creston with Rev. Mary O’Riley officiating. Larry will be laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery in Prescott.

Larry Alan Sweeney was born April 11, 1950, the son of Francis William and Marjorie Alice (Knodle) Sweeney in Creston. Larry was raised and educated in Prescott, where he graduated from Prescott High School with the class of 1968. On Oct. 4, 1969, Larry was united in marriage to Peggy Louise Morris and to this union, two daughters were born, Holly and Betsy.

Larry joined the Army National Guard in 1970 and served his country until being discharged in 1976. He resided in Creston most of his adult life. Larry and Peggy divorced in 1987.

Larry drove a semi-truck all across the country, traveling coast-to-coast for nearly 30 years. When he was younger, Larry attended flight school. He always had a passion for music, it carried him through the tough times and he was a phenomenal trombone player in his younger years. Listening to his radio was his daily pastime.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jon Sweeney; his former wife, Peggy Sweeney and his nephews: Shane Sweeney and Lucas Sweeney.

Left to mourn his passing are his daughters: Holly (Aaron) Cottrell of Johnston and Betsy (Andrew) Hunt of Britt; five grandchildren: Dylan (Lauren) Cottrell of Johnston, Nicholas (Katelyn) Hunt of Britt, Logan Cottrell (Lauren Steffensmeier) of Johnston, Tristan Hunt (Rylee Horstman) of Pella and Macie Cottrell of Johnston, two great-granddaughters: Briley Hunt and Parker Cottrell. Larry is also survived by a brother, Kevin (Debbie) Sweeney of Lenox; two sisters: Alice Reed of Prescott and Shelley Sweeney of West Des Moines; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
