Janis Imhoff, 74, of Atlantic, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at her home with family at her side.

Janis was born March 17, 1949, the daughter of Carrol and Juanita (Morrow) Matthews in Creston. She was welcomed home by her older brother, Bob. She grew up in Diagonal and graduated from Diagonal Community Schools in 1967. In 1970, she was united in marriage to Eldon Ambrose. A son, Christopher, was born. The couple would later divorce. She moved to Atlantic, where she held various positions. She drove a dump truck for Henningsen Construction Company and worked at Taco Del Sol for a time.

On April 20, 1991, she was united in marriage to Robert Imhoff. Janis drove a school bus for Atlantic Community Schools for more than 17 years until her retirement. This was her most rewarding job, transporting little kids.

Janis enjoyed her retirement, planting flowers, and playing with her cats. She loved spending time with her family and close friends. She was quite a gentle soul and was kind and accepting of everyone she came in contact with. She had a sense of humor about life and the world around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Dusty Nicole Dodson; brother, Robert Matthews; stepson, Timothy Imhoff in 2008 and stepgrandson, Dylan Nelson in 2008.

Janis is survived by her husband, Robert of Atlantic; son, Chris (Tina) Ambrose of Diagonal; stepsons, Donald Imhoff of Adair and Rob Imhoff of Fort Collins, Colorado; stepdaughter, Lisa Clark-Hansen of Atlantic; along with numerous stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, with Rev. Garry DeGeest officiating and burial in the Atlantic Cemetery. Visitation, with the family gathered, will be from 9 a.m. till the time of services Monday. A reception will be held following the committal service in the Schmidt Family Funeral Home Community Room.
