Kathy Smith, 65, of Afton, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston.

Kathy J. Smith, 65, of Afton, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Avenue in Creston. Pastor Mary O’Riley will officiate. The family asks you dress casual and encourages Kansas City Chiefs and Iowa Hawkeye apparel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery near Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 6:30 p.m., with family receiving friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Kathy Jane (Roan) Smith was born Oct. 30, 1958, daughter of Richard R. Roan and Vera Jane (Eckels) Roan in Osceola. She was raised in the Thayer area and graduated from East Union High School in 1977. She began working at Bunn-O-Matic Corp. in 1978.

On Feb. 2, 1985, Kathy married William A. Smith in Afton. They first settled in Afton; Kathy continued to work in various aspects at Bunn. They moved north of Afton in 2006. Kathy enjoyed doing yard work and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She especially loved attending her kids and grandkids’ many activities. Kathy retired from Bunn in 2021, working in production administration.

Survivors include her husband, William Smith of Afton; two daughters: Jennifer (Andy) Jackson of Lorimor and Jessica (Clinton) Haight of Ellston; six grandchildren: Talon Smith, Tristin and Titan Haight and Sawyer, Kamdyn and Jace Jackson; two brothers: Mike Roan of Thayer and Mark Roan of Osceola; mother-in-law, Iris Smith of Creston; two sisters-in-law: Kristine (Raymond) Clark of Creston and Theresa (Steve) Snyder of Winterset; brother-in-law, Gary (Amanda Mountain) Smith of Afton; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law, Edmund Smith.
