Richard A. Ross, 88, of Creston, formerly of Shannon City area, died Saturday, May 7, 2022, at his home in Creston. Celebration of life memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Al Rusk will officiate the service. The service will be livestreamed at the link under events at powersfh.com. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery south of Shannon City, Iowa. Military rites will be by Theodore J. Martens, Creston VFW Post #1797.

Open visitation will be 3:30-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Richard Allen “Dick” Ross, born Oct. 20, 1933, to David LeRoy “Roy” and Hazel Erma (Werner) Ross, in Union County, Iowa. He graduated from Shannon City High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957.

On Aug. 1, 1958, Dick was married to Joyce Arlene Latham. They had one daughter, Vickie Lynne. Dick and Joyce lived most of their married life in Union County, where they farmed west of Arispe. Dick also served as a rural mail carrier for 30 years, he enjoyed kidding the kids and working over the adults on his delivering days. He retired from mail carrying in 1998 and from farming in 2012, when he and Joyce moved to Creston. He enjoyed his daughter and later his two granddaughters, Megan Faye and Mandi Lynne, but found it a special treat to have his great-grandsons, Brogan Fay and Colin Joe come and spend quality time.

Dick belonged to both Arispe United Methodist Church and Shannon City Community Church and served on the East Union School Board for approximately 14 years.

Left to mourn his passing are his daughter Vickie (Mark) Morin of Ravenwood, Missouri; granddaughters, Megan (Jed) Bragg of Elmo, Missouri, and Mandi (Wilbur) Hedrick of Raytown, Missouri; great-grandsons, Brogan Fay O’Connor and Colin Joe Hedrick; sister-in-law Virginia Ross of Shannon City, Iowa, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Dick will be greatly missed.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, David LeRoy “Roy” Ross and Hazel Erma (Werner) Ross; his wife, Joyce Ross in 2021; father-in-law, John Walter Latham; mother in-law, Ruth (Long) Latham; two sisters, Gertrude Erma (Norman) Jennings and Josephine (Gary) Cook; brother, David LeRoy “Junior” Ross; sister-in-law, Norma (Francis) Sweet; brothers-in-law, Earl (Joyce) Latham and John (Dorie) Latham.
