AFTON - Dennis Cheers was sworn in to the East Union school board last Tuesday after winning an election for the seat earlier in November.
Cheer’s rise to the board involved beating out incumbent Adam Tallmon, who served as board president prior to the latest meeting. A shuffling of officers was needed heading into the next year of East Union business.
Involved with East Union in various activities and working for the district as a bus driver, Cheers brings a background of 25 years in public service positions as a firefighter, EMT and ambulance tech across the Union County area.
Sworn in alongside Cheers was Buffington, who ran unopposed as an incumbent.
Carol Eckels was named president of the board, with Sam McKnight nominated for vice president. School Business Official Rhiannon Tessum will continue to serve as secretary and treasurer.
Meetings will remain at the same time: the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. during the summer months and 5:30 p.m. during winter months to avoid conflict with school activities.
Other routine decisions made by East Union during the organizational meeting include:
— Approved Tessum and Eckels to sign for the district’s bank accounts
— Discussed annual board policies up for review
— Approved utilizing the Afton Star Enterprise as the district’s official newspaper
