9 years ago (2015)

The Creston/O-M girls golf team made a statement Thursday by posting a big win at the Fillie Invitational at American Legion Country Club. Creston/O-M posted a team score of 386, finishing 21 strokes ahead of runner-up and host Shenandoah. Clarinda was third at 422.

“Tonight, Creston was Tracktown, Iowa for the 800.” That’s how Mount Ayr head boys track coach Brad Elliott described an historic 800 meter race at Thursday’s Panther Relays. Creston seniors Jay Wolfe and Bryce Briley, along with Mount Ayr junior Kyle Dolecheck made a big statement on the last night for Drake Relays qualifying, as all three ran 1:57.23 or better.

19 years ago (2005)

In the three-class Cardinal Relays Friday, Creston placed sixth among eight teams in 3A with 36 points and two victories. Creston high jumper Sam Katzer continued to reach new heights, winning the Class 3A high jump at 6-4.

Put on your walking shows and head out to Wal-Mart Supercenter. The new 155,000 square feet store, south of U.S. Highway 34 at Laurel Street opens Wednesday morning. The Creston High School jazz band will play starting at 7 a.m. and a ribbon cutting will be held at 7:30 a.m. with an invocation by a local pastor. Members of the Creston VFW will present the colors and the jazz band will play the national anthem.

A 15-year old girl who attempted to swim across the old lake, located north of Mount Ayr on U.S. Highway 169 was rescued by Ringgold County officials after she started having trouble swimming. After the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 1:08 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Sheriff Vic Lilienthal was first on scene and rescued the girl, who was approximately 55 yards out.

The Creston Panther boys overcame a steady first-half rain, a 19-5 disadvantage in foul calls and a spunky Nodaway Valley team to come away with a 3-2 soccer victory in Nodaway Valley Monday.

The Creston boys tennis team garnered its first victory of the 2005 season, topping Corning 6-3, with singles wins from Tony Hartman, Mickenzie Hagen, Trevor Beck and Justin Haney.

29 years ago (1995)

Recordings of Union County Board of Supervisors closed sessions will be destroyed after one year, if not requested for other departmental files, according to a policy approved Monday by the board. The board voted 4-1 on the policy presented by Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon, one he said is based on minimum requirements in the Iowa Code.

In a hallway of the Des Moines Marriott Allen Smith and Greg Utterback shared a hug and a tear. Smith, known as “Southside,” knocked out Charlie “Mad Mexican” Negret with 2:50 remaining in the eighth and final round to win the vacant Iowa Boxing Association’s super middleweight belt.

Creston senior Brian Gerleman signed a National Junior College letter of intent to play basketball for Southwestern Community College next year. Gerleman was a second-team all-state selection by the Iowa Newspaper Association and third team choice by the Des Moines Register this year.

Two engines derailed Tuesday morning east of the Depot in Creston. Burlington Northern Railroad officials believe a wheel bearing gave way and the axle came off the engine wwhen it crossed a switch in the yard.

39 years ago (1985)

Creston senior Skip Tyler will be featured in the upcoming edition of American High School Athlete. The selection identifies Tyler as a member of a group comprised of less than 1% of all students nationwide.

A high-speed chase that ended just east of Creston Wednesday afternoon resulted in multiple charges being filed against an Oregon man and damage to a Union County Sheriff’s car. The suspect, Mark P. McCormac, 33, of Ashland, Oregon, was transferred to the Clarinda Treatment Center after issues in the Clarke County Jail arose. The chase lasted nearly 30 miles, though it took only 15 minutes.

Eleven teams are set for Friday’s competition in the Panther Relays. Joinging the host Panthers will be Bedford, Central Decatur, Clarinda, Glenwood, Griswold, Indianola, Norwalk, Red Oak, Shenandoah and Winterset.

Ron and Birdie Dolan, owners of the Dairy Queen at 103 N. Oak in Creston, announce the introduction of a new dessert, the Dairy Queen Blizzard. The new product is a frozen dairy dessert consisting of Dairy Queen soft ice cream blended with a variety of cookie and candy flavor combinations, including favorites as Butterfinger, Heath and M&Ms candy.
