A need for diverse representation among the items available for check out in Creston’s Gibson Memorial Library drew Vidette Dixon-Borgmann and Bethany Morgan-Beyyette to join the Library Board of Trustees, they each said. Mark Williams said his focus for the library will be technology. The three new members were recruited after it was discovered the board had been improperly reduced to five members.

Friday’s Pride of Iowa Conference Championship was a quiet scene, feeling incomplete for a wrestling tournament as teams were depleted due to COVID quarantines. The Mount Ayr Raiders, one of the top teams in the conference, was missing three of its ranked wrestlers and others and finished in seventh place. Southwest Valley missed the tournament entirely due to quarantines.

Union County Public Health has been notified it will receive 400 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, Public Health Nurse Robin Sevier said during the Union County Board of Supervisors meeting Monday. The vaccine will be available from public health free of charge.

A group known as “FIVE,” made up of Union County residents, each of whom commit to donating $5 a month, has donated to numerous local causes this year including those in relation to the Gibson Memorial Library, VFW, Green Valley State Park and Future Farmers of America. In 2020 alone, the group raised $8,000 for local needs.

13 years ago (2010)

65 to 31. That was the number of passing votes in the Senate Saturday to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The policy, enacted in 1993, banned openly gay and lesbian service members from serving in the military and caused nearly 14,000 people to be discharged. President Barack Obama repealed the act on Wednesday.

“Orange Out: Moving it for all the right reasons,” a service project organized by the Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) classes at Creston High School, raised about $8,500 which was donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s North Central States Chapter in Clive. More than 900 people supported the project and over 80 businesses contributed.

The Creston/O-M and Denison boys bowling teams met in Atlantic, a neutral site, for a Hawkeye 10 Conference showdown Saturday afternoon The Panthers held off a furious Monarch rally in the Baker rotation for a 2568-2501 victory in the varsity meet.

Creston City Council reappointed Lee McNichols and Matt Higgins to Creston’s water board of trustees Tuesday night. McNichols has served on the board of trustees since 1997. Higgins has served the board of trustees since January 2010.

With nearly two weeks to spare, Iowa has set a record for average snowfall in December, state climatologist Harry Hillaker said Tuesday. Hillaker said the average snowfall around the state reached 17.8 inches after most of the state was blanketed with snow Monday. The previous record, set in 1961, was 17.7 inches.

At Monday’s snow-abbreviated meeting, the Creston School Board approved a request from Spanish teacher Steve Shantz for a class trip this spring to Costa Rica. Shantz will lead seven students on the 10-day trip beginning June 7.

A previous chairman of the Greater Community Board of Trustees will re-assume the position next month. David Driskell was reelected chairman at Monday’s board meeting. Elected to his second six-year term in November, Driskell previously served as chairman in 1997.

With six players out and limited practice time because of inclement weather, Neil Lang knew he would have to elevate his game a level Tuesday night if the Creston basketball team was going to win. The senior poured in a career-high 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Pather’s 57-53 victory against Winterset in the Creston gymnasium.

Physician Dr. Richard Wilker announces his retirement, effective Jan. 1, 2001, after practicing for over 40 years in Creston. He thanks the community for allowing him to care for three generations of wonderful people.

Sheriff John Coulter will leave the office after 16 years at the end of the month. At 47, he’s no where near ready for retirement. He’s taken a job with Family Ties of Omaha. Coulter’s “territory” will be Polk and Madison counties, where he will be an in-home family counselor for troubled teens who have been referred by the Iowa Department of Human Services or by court officials.
