There won’t be any churros, chalupas or potato oles, but there will be a whole lot of construction going on at the Creston Taco John’s this fall. Located at 708 S. Walnut St., the fast-food Tex-Mex restaurant closed Sept. 14 to undergo a series of renovations that will eventually make it “attractive and among the most technologically advanced Taco John’s restaurants in America,” according to restaurant ownership.

Judy Woods, who joined the Creston Community School Board Monday after winning a write-in campaign in the Sept. 8 election, announced Wednesday she will step down from the board in July 2016. Woods’ decision solved the issue of how to eventually narrow a five-member school board to four when Creston and Prescott school districts consolidate July 1.

Longtime Creston News Advertiser journalist Larry Peterson will be inducted into the Creston Community Schools Hall of Fame as a distinguished contributor Friday in the CHS auditorium.

18 years ago (2005)

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. That is the strategy for the Creston School District selling its vacant school buildings. During the board’s Monday meeting, the board approved to sell Lincoln and Franklin buildings, just like it attempted to do earlier this year. The board declined all bids for Lincoln in May because of lack of information from the bidders.

East Union Superintendent Steve Clark had good news Monday for the school board at their meeting. “With the double sections in both kindergarten and first grade this year, I believe we need to postpone consideration of the possible closing of the primary center for at least two years,” he said.

This year’s homecoming queen coronation ceremony Thursday at Creston High School will be a special one with the addition of the school’s first Hall of Fame inductions. CHS Principal Todd Wolverton said inductees Marcia Wallace, Dr. Lance Goetz, John Robinson, Dr. Robert Kuhl, Jack Davis and Ron Levine all plan to attend the program. The late Howard Browne will be represented by daughter, Nancy Armstrong and Scott Sandeman will represent his father, the late Max Sandeman.

38 years ago (1985)

A new 24-hour emergency mental health service from Crossroads Medical Health Center here was explained to the Union County Board of Supervisors Monday. Pending approval next Monday by Crossroads board of directors, the emergency service will be available throughout a five-county area by telephone and personal contact.

Crestons spikers were on a roll that began early Saturday at the Eaglette Classic and held up through a win over Clarke here Monday. The Pantherettes lost their second match of the day to Lamoni, then rolled up six straight wins before falling to Bridgewater-Fontanelle 2-1 in the semifinals.

The fifth and sixth hols-in-one at Crestmoor Golf Club in than a month were made last week. Greg Driskell hit a 9-iron into the cup on Saturday while playing in a four-some with Dave Buck, Rod Chase and Jack Coates. Charlie Spurgeon scored an ace Sunday while playing with Ray Surlock and Marion Gildsig, with a 7-iron.

Graduation requirements at Creston High School will be different beginning with the graduating class of 1987. The total number of credits required will remain at 36, but students will be required to have two years each of math and science instead of one.

58 years ago (1965)

Paul Francis was reelected president of the board of education of the Creston community school district at the organization meeting of the board. William A. Evans was reelected as vice president. Arnold O. Kenyon, elected as a new member of the board in the Sept. 13 school election, was seated last night.

Property owned by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Miller at Adams and Division streets was offered to the city of Creston at a price of $42,000 as a site for a new city hall. The offer was made by Robert J. Beecher at the regular meeting of the city council last night. The council tabled for the matter for study.

A redistricting of Creston creating five new wards that are more nearly equal in population than those that have been in effect for many years was passed by the city council last night. The new wards will be in effect for the city election Nov. 2 and thereafter.

Like other area teams, rain is causing the Creston Panthers no end of trouble. Monday night the Panthers took a look at films from the 6-0 loss to Shenandoah last week and then drilled indoors. It is possible that Creston will have two of its injured players back the homecoming game here Friday with Maryville. Ray Brown and Butch Lauffer could both be ready by Friday.
