14 years ago (2009)

Afton City Council members could be on the verge of a pay increase. The council voted to accept the first reading of ordinance 185 amending compensation for council members at the regular Tuesday meeting. Council members would receive an additional $10 per meeting if the amendment passes.

About 300 people exited the overcrowded Afton City Hall and filed down main street to the United Methodist Church to hear Sen. Chuck Grassley give his take on health-care reform. The town hall meeting was one of four stops Grassley made in a Republican-friendly portion of the state Wednesday.

The Southwest Iowa Senior Golf Association held the fourth annual Senior Ryder Cup Aug. 3 at Crestmoor Golf Club. Twenty-two teams participated and the top team was awarded a traveling trophy. The winning team was comprised of Creston residents Rod Chase, Lee Gray, Dick Johnston, Keith Moore and Dan Coen.

34 years ago (1989)

Approximately 155 area residents will have new jobs when the Wal-Mart Discount department store opens in Creston. Construction on the new store, located at New York and Laurel avenues, is scheduled to be completed with the grand opening celebration taking place in early 1990.

Scott Belger and Scott Driskell are batting 1.000. The two Creston ball players have been recognized on the first two all-state teams released this summer. Both were placed on the Iowa Newspaper Associations second team Class 4A-3A unit and have now been named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association 3A team.

Southwestern Community College was selected as one of only 50 new institutions in the nation to have a chapter of the Students in Free Enterprise, Inc. (SIFE). The chapter will join a group of 220 previously established chapters.

Kristen Spriggs, 10, and Carrie Pendegraft, 11, of Creston will present a dance act in Bill Riley’s 30th annual Talent Sprout competition at the Iowa State Fair Aug. 23.

54 years ago (1969)

Two youths who escaped from the Union County Jail last night are back in custody today. Danny W. Williams, 18, of Creston and George Weckman, 18, of Des Moines, escaped by sawing through seven bars on a rear window. They were captured around 1:30 a.m. Williams escaped again while being held for questioning at the police station then surrendered to Adair County authorities in Greenfield.

Rooms and small apartments in Creston are needed for students who will be attending Southwestern Community College for the 1969-70 school year, Paul Somers, guidance counselor at the college, said today. Housing is needed for both men and women. Enrollment is expected to be larger than last year according to Somers.

Registration of bicycles in Creston for the new year starting Oct. 1 will be held next week, Chief of Police Frank Holliday said today. A city ordinance requires all bicycles operated in the Creston to be registered. Holliday said 722 bicycles have been registered in Creston during the current year

74 years ago (1949)

Marshall F. Camp, 43-year-old Creston attorney, was elected commander of the Iowa Department of the American Legion. Camp, elected without opposition at the annual state convention in Des Moines, became the first World War II veteran to head the Legion in Iowa.

The third annual Union County Farm Bureau sports festival, held yesterday at McKinley Park, was the most successful festival ever held in the county, C. Pettinger, general chairman, said. Nearly 400 persons attended and participated in the many sports events and family picnic.

Creston’s new swimming pool will be virtually complete before winter if the contract approved by city council last night is accepted at the regular council meeting Monday night.

A young cocker spaniel dog which jumped from a tourist’s car in Creston yesterday morning will be returned to the owner in East Peoria, Illinois, Creston Police said today. The owner remained in town through late yesterday afternoon attempting to find the dog but was unsuccessful. The canine showed up in a Creston garage mid-morning today.
