Throwback Thursday

17 years ago (2006)

Lisa Johns of Creston was presented the Governor’s Volunteer Award by Gov. Tom Vilsack at Southeast Polk High School in Runnels. Johns was honored for her outstanding volunteer service by sewing patches on uniforms for the Iowa National Guard 1168th Transportation Company deployment.

The Creston softball team had the highs and lows of the season, all in one day – losing an 8-5 game to Lenox where the Panthers gave up five runs in the seventh inning, and a 3-2 win over Class 1A No. 7 Murray.

Week’s prior to Monday’s Creston City Council meeting, Mike and Carol Brentnall asked Creston Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone their land south of Townline Street, between Ash and Osage streets, from residential to heavy industrial. The commission recommended the council reject the request. After hearing complaints from three nearby residents Monday, the council members voted to deny the request.

27 years ago (1996)

Creston cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings over Martensdale-St. Marys here Friday night behind the pitching of Nick Jannings and the bat of Ben Gerleman. Jannings gave up four hits, fanned five and walked just three, while Gerleman had three hits, including a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.

The 10,000 Crestonians announce Horace Daggett has been chosen to serve as Grand Marshall for the Fourth of July parade. Daggett, who retired this year after serving 24 years as 88th District representative, says Creston has always been a special place to him and he is honored to be selected to the role.

By unanimous vote Monday, the Gibson Memorial Library’s Board of Trustees approved a motion by Ann Coulter to continue pursuing a remodeling and addition plan for the current library at 310 N. Maple Street, and try to get “at least” $250,000 in additional funding within 30 days, prior to the boards next meeting Aug. 5.

Papetti’s HyGrade Egg Products Inc. in Lenox, today announced it will be purchased by Michael Foods in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $85 million.

47 years ago (1976)

Lola Barber will retire from her position as Union County deputy recorder effective July 1. She has held the position since 1971. Previously, she has worked in the auditors office from 1964-65, was the clerk for the Board of Review for Union County and a deputy county recorder from 1963-64. In between these times she worked in a grocery store with her husband Bill.

In one of the finest home games of the season, Perry’s 10th ranked Jayettes bested the Creston Pantherettes here Monday night 1-0, scoring in the top of the seventh for the victory.

Soon Iowans will no longer be legally required to wear motorcycle helmets and protective eye-wear to operate a motorcycle, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. The repel of the year-old state law becomes effective July 1.

Whatever Lewis Central’s Larry Wasson fooled the Creston Panthers with in the first meeting here, didn’t fool them Tuesday night as Coach Ron Clinton’s club pounded out a 16-6 victory in five innings to retain their lead in the tight Hawkeye Eight race.

67 years ago (1956)

R. Jack Mercer said 15 acts were chosen by judges as the best of the 24 to appear in the July 4th Talent Show. Those chosen are: Colleen Kelley, Bill Hartman, the Mohr Sisters, Nancy Stowell, Susan Hudson, Gloria Beemer, Hawks Twins Dance Team, Joyce Rice, the Schrader Family Piano Quartet; Connie Eblen, a female vocal quartet from Orient, Nat Clayton, Tin-Pan Alley Two, Dennis Martin and duet of Connie Lee Swanger and Connie Eblen.

Additional rainfall measuring at about one-half inch fell in the Creston area last night. It was measured as .59 of an inch at the I.S.U. plant in downtown Creston. The rainfall brought the total rainfall in June, as measured at the light plant, to 3.61 inches, only a little less than the total rainfall during the first six months of the year.

The Creston roster for the baseball game with the All American girls here Sunday night at 8 p.m., is nearly complete according to Manager Clarance Collings. Fourteen players have been contacted to play, although there may be several changes by game time. Profit from the game will be turned over to the high school to help in purchase of a movie camera.

The Creston Chamber of Commerce is in it’s new location –– in the Hotel Iowana building. The offices were moved this weekend to rooms 108-110 on the second floor of the Iowana, just off the mezzanine.
