Mandy Berg will end a run of just more than seven years as Adair County auditor and commissioner of elections — and 15 years in the auditor’s office — when she finishes June 4.
Berg submitted a letter of resignation to the Adair County Board of Supervisors during its meeting last Wednesday. The board accepted it with regret.
Berg has accepted a position with the Iowa Department of Revenue and is “excited to serve Iowans in a different capacity,” but told the newspaper in an email last week, “It has been rewarding to serve the residents of Adair County and work through everything from elections to day-to-day county operations.
“Throughout my time in the office, I’ve really valued the relationships I’ve built with county employees, elected officials and the public,” Berg said.
Berg said the decision to leave her post as auditor was not made lightly.
“Adair County has been a huge part of my life and career,” she said. “I’m incredibly thankful for the support and trust I’ve received from the community during my time as auditor.”
Berg started in the auditor’s office in 2010, succeeded Mindy Schaefer as county auditor in April 2019 and began her first term in 2021.
Berg wrote in her resignation letter that she is committed to helping with a smooth transition and is willing to assist with training or other steps needed to ensure continuity of operations.
The supervisors are required to appoint a replacement within 40 days of the vacancy. A notice will be published saying the public may petition for a special election. However, Berg said the timing of her resignation prevents a special election, so the position would be required to go on the general election ballot in November.
Whoever is appointed will also have to appear on the November ballot if they wish to continue in the role. Additionally, there is no filing period for auditor; candidates are nominated by convention by political parties, unless the individual is an independent or non-party political organization candidate.
