Golfers sweep meet at Southwest Valley

Russell wins girls medalist honors

Nodaway Valley Golf

CORNING — Nodaway Valley’s golfers swept a meet Friday at Southwest Valley, played at Happy Hollow Country Club outside of Corning.

The boys carded a 170 as a group while the girls shot a 196. Head coach Julie Hartman expressed how impressed she was that both groups gutted the round out on a cold and windy afternoon for the team sweep.

NV senior Mallory Russell was girls medalist, carding a 43. CAM sophomore Kesley Platt was runner-up with a 47.

Other finishers for the Wolverine girls included Taryn Gutierrez (49), Brailyann Coffman (51), Aleyah Pilgreen (53), Aubree Williams (57) and Chloe Rardin (57).

Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Austin Rasmussen was medalist for the boys meet while Southwest Valley’s Kaden Greenwalt posted a 37, but the Wolverines still had enough as a group to win.

Ty Rardin was NV’s lowest score at a 40, with Keyin Steeve (42), Jack Berg (43), Ty Strode (45), Sam Miller (46) and Derek Raasch (47) all shooting sub-50 scores.

The meet at Corning was the second-straight day of golf for the boys. While no one medaled Thursday at the 18-hole Dale Erickson Memorial Tournament in Anita, Berg and Rardin each shot 81s, Steeve had an 84, Miller an 87 and Raasch an 89, while Strode shot a 102. Earlham had four finish in the top 10 to win the meet with a 304. Nodaway Valley’s team score was 334, which was fourth place.

Girls silver, boys bronze in SWI Cup

CRESTON — In a unique setup from many other meets, the Nodaway Valley golfers played on two different courses last Tuesday as part of the SWI Cup. The girls began in Creston and finished in Afton, while the boys did opposite that.

The girls finished second and the boys were third.

Russell was runner-up medalist for the girls with an 87 while Coffman tied for sixth with a 100. Gutierrez was third on the team with a 107. On the boys side, the best three on the team included Rardin’s 84, Miller’s 86 and Steeve’s 89.

Jaylee Shaffer from Mount Ayr won the girls meet with a 74 while the boys side was won by Zayne Eslinger from East Union (75).
