Residents who have rallied around the idea of Greenfield someday having a new swimming pool are encouraged by both the progress made so far and what lies ahead in 2026.
Last November, voters approved a bond issue proposed by the city of Greenfield in an amount not to exceed $1 million, representing the city’s local commitment toward a new pool. A conceptual drawing was also unveiled, offering another glimpse into the direction of the project.
That vote marked a turning point, transforming years of discussion into action and providing hope for those concerned about the longevity of the current pool, which was built in the 1940s and is nearing the end of its useful life.
Dive Into Project Pool Greenfield 2027 planning committee member Renee Schwartz described the work completed thus far as “amazing and humbling.”
“It’s amazing from the standpoint of dedicated volunteers, the mayor, City Council members, city staff and incredible community support,” Schwartz said. “At the same time, it’s humbling because of the dedication and support from all of these people and the continued work they offer each day to keep this project on track.”
Recently, Project Pool team members prepared and mailed information packets to approximately 3,200 county residents. The mailing included a cover letter, project information and donation forms. Committee members also completed a question-and-answer page on the project website that outlines donation options, pledges and contact information at www.greenfieldpool.com.
Donations are being accepted through the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation, which can be reached at www.greenfieldiafoundation.org or by calling 641-745-7504.
Committee members report that more than $2.1 million has been raised toward the estimated $5 million-plus project. Schwartz said each contribution represents another “yes” from the community in support of a new pool.
She added that qualifying for certain grants requires the project to reach specific fundraising benchmarks, making continued donations critical.
“We are asking all community members of Greenfield and Adair County to search their hearts and minds as to what they can afford to donate or pledge toward the pool,” Schwartz said. “The committee estimates that $3.6 million is needed to qualify the project for some of the larger grants available. We are extremely hopeful the mass mailing will help us reach that level. While daunting, we believe it is achievable.”
At the same time, the Operation Pool 2026 committee is focused on preparing for this summer’s pool operations. That work includes collaborating with the city on the pool budget, assisting with the recruitment of returning and new lifeguards, hiring a manager, and coordinating training dates for lifeguards and Red Cross swimming lesson instructors.
Committee member Jacque Eblen said winter weather often brings anticipation of summer days spent at the pool, but emphasized that such seasons require months of preparation.
“Hot summer days at the pool don’t happen on their own,” Eblen said. “They take months of planning, budgeting and staffing. Operation Pool is working diligently with the city and parks and recreation committee to ensure a safe and successful 2026 season. Opening day will be here before we know it, and staff will be hired, certified and working together to make Red Cross swimming lessons and water safety a top priority while continuing to provide recreational opportunities for the community.”
Schwartz said planners believe the current pool may realistically have only one more season in which it can operate safely and effectively.
“Time is of the essence as the pool’s life is nearing its end,” she said. “Our request for financial support is significant, but we ask the public to be as generous as possible. The future of this project depends on it.”
