The Feldhacker family bought the former Panther Lanes located at 301 N. Cherry St. in Creston. Family Fun Center’s concession offered pizza, nachos, hot dogs and a variety of fried foods, but no alcohol. The Feldhackers and their assistant manager, Jack Willis, said this omission would help keep a family environment.
Creston Schools’ fifth grade Colonial Day took place, when students spent the morning and early afternoon completing hands-on activities to simulate life in the colonial times. Activities included outdoor cooking, using colonial tools, archery, trapping, quilting, making corn husk dolls and playing colonial games.

Creston graduate Mike Giles, 32-year-old musician and music teacher at Iowa State University, traveled to Russia with several other ISU faculty members. The group was invited to perform jazz music at a newly renovated, 14th-century cathedral. They also had the chance to travel through Germany and sight-see in Russia. Giles, son of Jim and Rhonda Giles of Creston, was also invited to perform on television with a Russian jazz musician.

In a story by CNA’s Larry Peterson, Creston native Jane Kilkenny, part of the Wonder Works team who design props, miniature mock-ups and costumes for TV and movies, explained how she helped construct a full-scale model of the “splashdown” capsule which was featured in the movie Apollo-13. She worked for several companies in Los Angeles who worked on set design. She was a 1981 Creston High School graduate.
Panthers remain unbeaten — Creston/O-M’s 99-yard scoring drive in their first four possessions, relied on two goal-line defensive stands secured the Panthers’ 22-6 win over Norwalk in their Friday homecoming football game. The Panthers were 3-0 in the Class 3A District 7.
It was reported in the Creston News Advertiser Monday, Oct 2, 1995, that the jury in the O.J. Simpson trial began deliberations. The following day, Oct 3, 1995, he was found “not guilty” and acquitted of the double murders of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Upon hearing the verdict, O.J. punched his fist in the air and embraced his lead defense attorney Johnnie Cochran Jr.

Oct. 2, 1970 was “Perry Christensen Day” at the Union County Republican Central Committee headquarters in the “former Bray Grocery” located at 115 W. Montgomery St. The evening featured free coffee and a meet-and-greet with the candidate, who was running for re-election as State Representative.
Then Mayor Marvin J. Taylor announced that the one-way traffic system 3-month trial period was to begin Oct. 5, 1970. The street department put up signs all over Creston explaining the system prior to the Monday start day. The area affected were the streets in Creston’s business district bounded by Adams, Walnut, Howard and Division streets.
A twin-engine executive airplane landing in Creston Municipal Airport blew a tire upon landing and blocked the main runway for two hours while a new wheel and tire was flown from Chicago to Des Moines, then transported by automobile to Creston.
It was reported that 1970 was the best Union County Fair in its 18 years of being at the new location, where a $2,751 operations profit was recorded, and 12,000 people attended.
