Area boys basketball roundup: SWV picks up win, drops one; NV falls at home

Shenandoah 70, Southwest Valley 53

SHENANDOAH – Southwest Valley (1-1) fell 70-53 in a Tuesday night matchup against Shenandoah (1-1).

The Timberwolves were coming off of a win Monday night when they met Shenandoah’s high octane offense.

Southwest Valley fell behind early with the Mustangs took a 14-11 lead after the first quarter. With the game close, Shenandoah took over in the second quarter with a 25 point explosion.

Things were looking grim for the Timberwolves, but contributions from Blaine Venteicher and Tucker Tepoel put the team in a position to make a second half run. The two combined for 14 of the teams’ 23 first half points. At halftime, the score was 39-23.

It was more of the same in the third quarter with Shenandoah asserting itself offensively, putting up a 21 point quarter. With a large deficit, the Warhawks ended on a good note with two consecutive 15 point quarter to end the game with a 70-53 final score.

Venteicher led the team in scoring with 15, and Tepoel followed closely with 13.

Lamoni 65, Murray 56

MURRAY – After a strong start, Murray couldn’t hang on during its 65-56 loss Tuesday night to Lamoni.

The Mustangs came out of the gate with a strong offensive performance. Putting up 17 points in the first quarter gave Murray a 17-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

Another scoring spree gave Murray a 32-27 lead at halftime.

“We did a great job in the first half at getting a lead, but in the second half, we did not value the basketball very well,” Murray head coach Darin Wookey said.

Things switched in the second half with turnovers hurting the Mustangs. Lamoni was able to put up 21 points to Murray’s eight and turn the tide. A 17 point fourth quarter was all the Demons needed to secure the victory.

“We turned the ball over 26 times to only 15 asissts,” said Wookey. “To compound the problem, we had too many fouls to start the third quarter, and they took advantage of that. They made 23 free throws, and we only attempted 12.”

East Mills 65, Diagonal 27

MALVERN – Diagonal dropped its season opener in a 65-27 loss Monday night against East Mills.

The Maroons fell behind early as East Mills stormed out of the gate taking a commanding 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The nine points Diagonal scored in the first were the most it would score in a quarter.

An offensive explosion in the first half put East Mills up 38-14 at halftime. A 24-point comeback would be tough with East Mills scoring at will and playing solid defense.

The second half was a carryover of the first. East Mills continued to score while Diagonal struggled to knock down shots, scoring 13 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Kade Klommhaus led the team in scoring with 13 points and rebounds with six. Tyler Jarred, William O’Connor, James Shiflett and Will Strange all contributed with three points each.

Clarinda 63, Nodaway Valley 57

GREENFIELD – In a close game throughout, Nodaway valley dropped its first game of the season to Clarinda in a 63-57 loss Monday night.

Nodaway Valley took the early lead with a strong first quarter offensive performance. The Wolverines put up 17 points and led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Clarinda kicked things up starting in the second half with 21 points. At halftime, Nodaway Valley trailed 34-33. Things were close during the second half. Each team scored 11 points in the third quarter to keep the game at one point, 45-44.

Clarinda did just enough in the fourth quarter to pull away. The defense held up, and the offense was able to put up 18 points to finish with a 63-57 win.

Lenox 64, Orient-Macksburg 24

LENOX – It was a strong showing for Lenox Tuesday night with a 64-24 win against Orient-Macksburg.

The Tigers defense held O-M scoreless in the first quarter. The Tigers scored 23 in the first. O-M struggled to knock down shots with only two points at the end of the second quarter.Lenox extended its lead to 36-2 at halftime and never let up.

O-M was able to figure some things out offensively with a 14 point third quarter and eight point quarter to gain a little momentum despite the early struggles.

Colton Vieux led the charge for Lenox with a 23 point performance. He knocked down four 3-pointers en route to the win.

Southwest Valley 61, Griswold 38

GRISWOLD – Southwest Valley dominated Monday night in a 61-38 win against Griswold.

Southwest Valley held Griswold to 12 points in the first half. Pairing offense and defense, the Warhwaks played a complete game.

During the second half, Griswold started knocking down shots and free throws. The Tigers were able to put up 26 points in the second half and figure some things out offensively.

The Wolverines played well offensively with four players reaching double digits. Venteicher scored a team-high 18 points. Tucker Tepoel followed with 14. Garret Martin and Adam Harris rounded out the scoring leaders with 12 and 10 points.
