Area football roundup: Mount Ayr's Weehler has career day, Lenox thumps Murray

Mount Ayr 35, Clarinda 3

CLARINDA – Mount Ayr struck first and pulled away Friday night against Clarinda, beating the Cardinals 35-3.

A Payton Weehler 3-yard rushing score in the first quarter put the Raiders ahead and a 30-yard Nathan Barnes field goal pulled Clarinda back to make it 7-3, but Weehler completed a 12-yard pass to Kolben Klommhaus with under a minute remaining in the first quarter to create separation into the second quarter.

Another Weehler passing touchdown, this time an 88-yard connection to Dawson Frost, gave the Raiders a 21-3 lead with 3:05 left in the second quarter.

Weehler rushed one in and found Klommhaus from 10-yards out in the second half to improve his personal touchdown total to five.

Weehler rushed for 62 yards on 18 attempts and completed 12 passes on 18 attempts for 252 yards.

Frost had 180 yards receiving on six catches.

The win for the Raiders comes after losing 14-6 to Panorama, a loss which knocked Mount Ayr out of the Des Moines Register’s top-10 Class 1A rankings.

Lenox 70, Murray 6

LENOX – Lenox trounced Murray Friday night, winning 70-6.

The Tigers were led by Colton Gordon’s 192 yards rushing and three scores in the win, scoring 55-yard and 18-yard touchdown runs.

Drew Venteicher had three scores also, rushing for 138 yards on 12 attempts. Gordon’s and Venteicher’s touchdowns all came in the first half.

Isaac Grundman added added a score and Brad Larson had an interception run back for a score. Brad Larson and Parker Reed each had receiving touchdowns from Cullen Wood.

Zack Belden had a 24-yard touchdown pass to Reece Held as the lone score for the Mustangs. It was one of three completed passes for Belden.

Lenox was led in tackling by Venteicher with 4 1/2 tackles and two sacks. Parker Reed also had two sacks and Keegan Christensen and Devin Whipple had one each.

Murray’s Tyson Nall had five tackles and Held had 10 1/2. Chance Lecy and Rilee Werner each had sacks.

Lecy was the leader in rushing yards with 15.

AHSTW 34, Nodaway Valley 14

AVOCA – Nodaway Valley lost to AHSTW Friday night, losing 34-14.

The Wolverines were led by Nathan Russell in the passing department, going 11-for-34 with 168 yards. He had two interceptions and a passing score.

Tony Ayase had 6 yards rushing on 22 attempts. He had one score.

Russell’s passing score went to Colby Harris, who finished with 32 yards receiving on two catches. Hunter Ernst led in receiving yards with 77 on four catches.

Clay Hohertz had 11 1/2 tackles in the loss. Tony Ayase had nine tackles, two coming for a loss. Avery Phillippi had five tackles with one sack.

Adam Ayase, Caelen DeVault and Jon Gebbie each had fumble recoveries.

Earlham 42, Southwest Valley 6

EARLHAM – Southwest Valley lost to Class A No. 8 Earlham Friday night, losing 42-6.

The Timberwolves were led in tackling by Tallen Myers with eight. He had one assisted tackle for a loss with Brendan Pearson, who had seven tackles.

Hunter Crill posted the lone sack of the game for Southwest Valley. Kaden Jacobs had one fumble recovery.

Brendan Knapp had 78 yards passing on five completions and rushed for 64 yards on 12 attempts. He had a rushing touchdown as the lone score of the night for the Timberwolves.

Cade Myers had 68 receiving yards on four catches.

Lamoni 44, East Union 6

AFTON – East Union lost to Lamoni 44-6 Friday night.

The Eagles' leasing rusher was Gus McNeill, rushing for 26 yards on three attempts. He was also the leading passer with 92 yards on eight completions.

McNeill passed for one score, a 32-yard reception to Kanyon Huntington. It was Huntington's only catch of the day.

Kael Seales had 49 yards on four catches.

Gauge Mitchell had 13 tackles, two coming for a loss, including a sack. Seales also had a sack, posting 8 1/2 tackles.
