Iowa State University

AMES – Shelby Soper of Adair, studying agriculture and society at Iowa State University, took learning out of the classroom to explore the world participating in a short-travel study-abroad program this summer.

Soper participated in “Exploring Ethical Challenges of Leadership,” and spent time in Munich, Germany and Krakow, Poland.

Students studied ethical leadership in a global context to prepare them to make tough choices. The group learned about the ethical decisions made by leaders and ordinary people during the Holocaust through topical tours and then applied those concepts to their personal life as well as a variety of agriculture and life sciences professions. Sites visited on the trip included University of Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Olympic Site, Salt Mine, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Stained Glass Museum.

The Ag Study Abroad Office works with faculty members in departments to offer a variety of trips that help students gain a new perspective at locations all around the world. This summer, nearly 100 students participated in travel programs facilitated through the office. Through trips offered over breaks in the academic year, during the summer and semester-long exchanges or internships, students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been on all seven continents studying agriculture and life sciences.
