John Nelson Campfield, 84, died Monday, Oct. 17, at his home in Apache Junction, Arizona.
John Nelson Campfield, son of Doris B. (Locke) and James Henry Campfield, was born June 7, 1932, in Winterset.
John graduated from Lorimor in 1951. He served his country with the United States Army from October 1952 to 1954. He continued his service through the Reserves until 1960.
On March 8, 1953, John married Marilyn Cornelison in Lorimor. In 1957, John and Marilyn moved to Osceola where they resided until moving to Apache Junction, Arizona, in 2002. While living in Osceola, he was a member of the Osceola Saddle Club, Clarke County Sheriff’s Posse and was a 4-H leader.
John worked for E.I. Sargent Quarries, also known as Martin Marietta, retiring after 42 years. After retiring, John enjoyed riding his horse, Skip, and being part of the livestock control team at the Iowa State Fair. John, who never met a stranger, enjoyed working and visiting with all of the people who worked and attended the Iowa State Fair. He also worked with the Wells Fargo stagecoach hitch, traveled five states and rode in New York City, delivering the CEO of Wells Fargo to the Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell.
John is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter Cindy McCann (friend David) of Apache Junction, Arizona; son John Scott (Kris) of Osceola; grandsons, Mike (J.J.) McCann of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Matt Campfield of Denver, Colorado, Beau Campfield of Osceola and John Jordan Campfield of Osceola; granddaughters, Laurie (Steve) Hextell of Apache Junction, Arizona, and Brooke (Shawn) Powell of Osceola; great-grandchildren, Kara Campfield of Osceola, Tristan Campfield of Indianola, Devon McCann of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cody and Austin Hextell of Apache Junction, Arizona, and John Campfield of Denver, Colorado; brother Bob Campfield of Des Moines; sisters, Carolyn Johnson of Missouri and Diana Campfield of Hardy, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, step-mom Naomi and brother Joe.
Graveside services will be held at a later date in Osceola.
