900th win

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State women’s basketball coach Dave Kragel recorded his 900th career win Wednesday night as the No. 8 Lady Senators finished off an undefeated regular season with a 71-48 victory at Southwest Tennessee in Memphis.

Kragel is a Corning High School graduate and All-American at Creston Junior College before playing at Oklahoma State.

It’s the fifth straight undefeated run through Tennessee Community College Athletic Association for Walters State (29-0, 18-0 TCCAA). The Lady Senators have won 102 consecutive region games with 90 during the regular season.

Walters State will be the No. 1 seed in the TCCAA-NJCAA Region VII Tournament next week at Volunteer State in Gallatin.

FRECO Club

Jeff Sand, Creston/O-M middle school wrestling coach, has announced plans for the second year of the offseason “FRECO” wrestling club.

Practice begins March 2 and continues through May, with sessions from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sundays and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the high school wrestling room.

Sand said freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling competition allows young competitors to work on wrestling skills that transfer to the high school folkstyle season.

Cost is $50 for the season with checks payable to Express Wrestling. Wrestlers also need to purchase a USA Wrestling card to participate in tournaments. Cost is $35 and information is available online at www.usawrestling.org.

“Being on the mat and practicing is one thing, but competing in the offseason will help propel our wrestlers even further,” Sand said.

Practices or duals against other FRECO clubs in the region may also be arranged to allow more competition at no cost, Sand added.

League finals

DUBUQUE — The Central College men’s basketball team beat top-seeded University of Dubque in the Iowa Conference semifinals Thursday night, 72-61.

The Dutch (18-9) were able to reverse the result of last Saturday’s regular season finale, a 67-57 Dubuque victory. It was Central’s fourth game in Dubuque in nine days, and the Dutch won three of the four.

Winning back-to-back road games in league tournament play for the first time in school history, Central advances to face Wartburg Saturday in the title game at 7 p.m. in Waverly.

Junior Pete Walker of Red Oak led the Dutch Thursday with 20 points and seven assists.

Junior Colby Taylor of Creston finished with 16 points and nine rebounds for Central.

Central and Wartburg last met on Feb. 13 in Pella. The Dutch put on a 3-point shooting clinic in that game to win 101-75.

“We’ve got to keep doing what we’ve been doing.” said Central coach Craig Douma. “Our game plan is not going to change a whole lot. We just need to play 40 solid minutes of basketball.”
