Habitat partners complete another project

A recent Habitat for Humanity project began when Denise Fisk asked Charlie Westman if there was anything Habitat for Humanity of Union County could do to help retrofit the home of the great-grandparents of Gabe Ward, a 3-year-old Afton boy who was paralyzed in an auto accident almost a year ago.

Habitat hosted a tip night fundraiser at The Pizza Ranch, and with help from Thrivent Financial, raised about $1,300 to begin the project.

The first day found Habitat volunteers assisted by Alan Landers, Dean Haight and the homeowner, all of Afton, rebuilding the deck at Gabe’s house so that an accessibility ramp could be built. Because it was late in the year, completion of the project was postponed until warmer weather.

Last week, volunteers started again and were able to install new wider doors, and with the help of First National Bank employees, Steve Crittenden, Bruce Jones, Dan Waigand and Staci Heaberlin, new laminated flooring. The finishing touches were made Thursday when Habitat partnered with Echo Concrete, who donated the concrete and delivery, for the sidewalk that replaced a temporary sidewalk installed last fall. On Friday, Winterstien Construction cut the control joints in the sidewalk.

Habitat of Humanity of Union County would like to thank the Creston News Advertiser and Creston Radio for their continuing support.
