In a new meet this year, Creston hosted the Hawkeye 10 South Invitational Tuesday, getting a look at conference opponents early. The invite consisted of Creston, Clarinda, Glenwood, Red Oak and Shenadoah.
Glenwood and Clarinda split the meet, with the Rams winning the boys and the Cardinals taking the girls. They each took silver in the opposite.
The Creston boys finished fifth while the girls placed third. Combined, the girls and boys had four winning events and 11 second-place events.
Gold medalists
Former state qualifiers are back on top as Tom Mikkelsen and sophomore Cora Smith each brought home individual golds.
Mikkelsen won the shot put with a mark of 54-10.25. It was more than 7-feet farther than the second-place throw. This is his best mark this year, though the season is early. His personal best is 57-04.5.

Smith was a 400m state qualifier last year and ran on the medaling 4x800m relay team. Tuesday she won the 200 and 400m dashes, running times of 26.16 and 1:00.56, respectively. Her 200m time is a new personal best, topping last year’s time by 0.03 seconds. Her 400m time was her season best, but her PR is a 59.33.
The Panthers’ winning relay was the girls distance medley, comprised of seniors Grace Keeler, Braylee Pokorny and Maylee Riley as well as sophomore Henley Shinn. The team won in a time of 4:43.22, beating Glenwood by nearly 10 seconds.

Silver medalists
Six boys events and five girls events placed second. In field events, Mikkelsen placed second in the discus, throwing 151-05, a new personal best mark. His best throw last year was 144-10. He placed behind Simon Hennings of Shenandoah who threw 154-00.

Smith placed second in the long jump with a leap of 15-09, her personal best. Her farthest mark last season was 15-07.25. She placed behind Clarinda’s Kylie Meier who jumped 16-01.25.
In individual running events, senior Seth Gordon took second in the 100m dash, running 11.00, a personal best, beating his previous time of 11.06. Cale Hall of Red Oak took first in 10.89.
Durrell Haynes also posted a personal best in his second-place finish in the 110m high hurdles. He ran 15.84, topping his previous best of 16.04. He finished behind Aaden Lopez of Glenwood.
Rounding out individual silver medals was Avery Staver’s performance in the 100m dash. The senior ran 12.83, finishing behind Ellery Bird of Clarinda. It was a PR for Staver.
Second-place relays for the boys were the sprint medley, the 4x100 and the 4x800. For the girls, the sprint medley, 4x200 and 4x800 placed second.

The throwing events saw lots of competition as 36 boys and 18 girls competed in shot put and 32 boys and 25 girls competed in discus.
In shot put, Creston senior Brynn Tussey finished third, throwing a PR of 32-11. Jaycee Hanson finished fourth with a mark of 32-8.5. In discus, Hanson placed fourth with a throw of 88-10.
In the 800m dash, Goodenberger and Baird placed third and fourth, respectively. Haynes placed fourth in the long jump with a PR jump of 19-7. In the 100m high hurdles, Henderson finished fifth in a PR of 18.02.
The boys are scheduled to return to action today in Winterset and Monday in Glenwood while the girls will compete Tuesday in Red Oak.
