Spartan offense goes cold in 60-25 loss

Southwestern's Tammy Scott shoots against Marshalltown Wednesday. Scott had six points and seven rebounds in the 60-25 loss.

A quick 4-0 lead in the opening two minutes proved to be a misnomer of things to come Wednesday for the Southwestern women.

Point guard Jordyn Hall popped in a short jumper for that early 4-0 edge over Marshalltown in a matchup of two teams near each other in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference standings.

The chance for the Spartans to snare a home conference win quickly faded into a 9-4 deficit by the end of the quarter. Marshalltown moved ahead 27-13 at halftime and a 12-4 third quarter propelled the Tigers to a dominating 60-25 victory. The Tigers, 7-19 overall, improved to 4-14 in the ICCAC. Southwestern fell to 4-22 and 0-18.

Success was not the product of sharp shooting by the Tigers, who finished at 24% from the field (18-75), including a paltry 3-of-26 from 3-point range. However, Marshalltown had significant advantages in several key statistical categories.

Maddie Richter of Southwestern sets for a 3-point shot against Marshalltown. Richter made one 3-pointer in scoring seven points for the Spartans.

The Tigers outrebounded Southwestern 49-27, had only 10 turnovers to 25 for the Spartans (including 12 Tiger steals) and outscored Southwestern 21-2 at the free throw line. The Spartans were 10-48 from the field (20.8%), including 3-25 (12%) from behind the arc.

Maddie Richter of CAM had a team-high seven points with six rebounds for the Spartans. Hall didn’t have her best shooting night, but contributed a team-high seven rebounds, four assists and three steals while scoring four points. Tammy Scott finished with seven rebounds and six points.

Southwestern Community College held a moment of silence for the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team involved in a bus crash earlier Wednesday in Calhoun County before the game tipped off. There was one fatality and more than 30 injuries on the bus carrying the team.

Southwestern point guard Jordyn Hall advances the ball on a Spartan fast break. Hall had four points, four assists, three steals and seven rebounds.

The Spartan women host Ellsworth (11-12, 7-10) at 1 p.m. Saturday, prior to the 3 p.m. men’s game.
