Perfect at home: Panther girls go 2-0

With seven girls ending the evening 2-0, it’s no surprise Creston walked away with two wins Tuesday in a home triangular with Glenwood and Clarke.

The second dual of the evening saw the Panthers defeat Glenwood 45-30, and in the final dual, Creston topped Clarke 42-24.

Panthers undefeated on the night were Ella Pryor, Eva Chesnut, Sydney Hoffman, Alainah Galanakis, Grace Keeler, Kora Lohoff and Lydia Williams. Christina Strand logged one win.

Several girls earned one of their wins via forfeit. Lohoff pinned both her opponents, winning in 1:18 and 1:14.

The first round of IA Wrestle rankings contains two Panther girls.

Chesnut, a 105-pound freshman, is ranked 10th in 2A, and Keeler, a 135-pound senior is ranked fifth.

Against each other, Glenwood defeated Clarke in a close 31-30 dual.

Previously, the Creston girls competed at the Riverside Tournament where the Panthers finished third overall with 109 points. They tied with Riverside and were behind Ridge View with 127 and Western Iowa with 122.

At the meet, Keeler not only won the 135 bracket, she became the first Creston girl to ever log 100 career wins.

Chesnut placed second at 105, and Galanakis was second at 130.

Today the Panthers head to Central DeWitt for the Saber Wrestling Invitational. Then they won’t be back until after the new year.

Boys

Glenwood dominated on the boys’ side, taking down Clarke 72-11 before winning against Creston 54-24. The Panthers beat Clarke 54-18.

Against the Rams, Creston came out with a strong start, pins by seniors Lane Travis and Brodrick Phelps. This gave Creston a 12-0 advantage to start the night.

Brodrick Phelps works to pin Glenwood's Ben Christiansen Tuesday at home. Phelps was 2-0 on the night.

Slowly, the points started adding up for Glenwood.

Zadek Engdahl fell to Glenwood’s Connor Wear 12-8, giving the Rams 3 points. He saved a point by getting a late takedown to avoid the major decision.

Colby Brammer, 157, looked to have his bout won for the Panthers to take three of the first four, but he gave up a takedown with 30 seconds left to lose 5-4.

From there it snowballed as Glenwood pinned Creston’s next six wrestlers.

Creston struggled at the top of the lineup as Glenwood’s top-ranked Mason Koehler took a win at 215 in less than 10 seconds and No. 8 Drake Buthe got the win over Creston’s seasoned Gunner Martwick.

By the end, Creston was able to scrape out 12 more points with a pin by Ben James at 126 and a forfeit for Tyler Travis at 132.

Winning in head-to-head bouts against Clarke were Lane Travis (3:37), Phelps (2:37) and Martwick (1:02).

At the Riverside tournament, Creston finished eighth with 105 points.

Lane Travis won the 138-pound bracket and is still undefeated on the season.

Saturday, Creston competes at Central DeWitt. Their next competition is after the holiday break.
