East Union golfer signs with Southwestern

Southwestern Community College head golf Coach Doug North has announced the signing of East Union standout Gwen Nixon to the Spartan women’s golf program. Nixon, a native of Afton, will join the Southwestern roster beginning in the 2026 season.

Nixon has been a consistent contributor for the East Union Eagles throughout her high school career, earning a spot in the 2025 Iowa high school state tournament field. Known for her composed but competitive approach, Nixon credits her father for sparking her early love of the game and for encouraging her to continually improve both mentally and physically on the course.

“Gwen is a stellar 2026 commitment,” North said. “She has had lots of growth and improvement over the last few years, and I am excited to see what she can accomplish here. Her family has been Spartans forever, so it is great to keep elite talent home.”

A product of Lakeshore Golf and Country Club, Nixon has developed a reputation for her thoughtful course management and ability to adapt to challenging situations. She plans to pursue an associate’s degree and then transfer while continuing to develop her game.
