Senior Averi Culbertson placed 26th to lead Creston at the Hawkeye Ten Conference girls golf tournament Monday at Carroll.
The boys golf team participated in the Class 3A Sectional at Atlantic Tuesday, placing sixth with a score of 349. ADM, Atlantic and Glenwood are the teams advancing to the district. No Creston golfers qualified individually. Junior Marshall Long led the Panthers in 16th place with an 80, just two shots off individual district qualifying.
Lewis Central girls won their first Hawkeye Ten golf championship at Carroll National Golf Club. The Titans edged host Kuemper Catholic by one stroke, 364-365. LC freshman Chloe Perfect shot a 75 as meet medalist.
Creston did not have the minimum four players to qualify in the team scoring. After Culbertson’s team-leading score of 105 in 26th, Ricci Johnston and Nora Barton finished 51st and 54th, respectively, with scores of 130 and 135.
“Averi is capable of scoring in double digits, but she struggled early,” Creston coach Steve Shantz said. “The rough was long and there were lots of lost balls.”
Creston now prepares for the Class 2A Regional tournament May 21 at Carroll.
Atlantic and Glenwood from the Hawkeye Ten join sectional champion ADM in advancing to the district round of Class 3A boys postseason golf after Tuesday’s action at Atlantic Golf and Country Club.
ADM boys shot 294 for an 11-stroke cushion over runner-up Atlantic at 305. Glenwood also advanced at 323 by four strokes over fourth-place Winterset. Harlan (343) and Creston (349) took fifth and sixth place in the eight-team field. Clarke was seventh at 351.
Long was only two strokes off a district qualifying finish to lead the Panthers with an 80. Two individuals (and ties) besides members of the qualifying team advance from each sectional, and those qualifiers Tuesday each shot 78.
Creston’s Garrett Troutwine was 27th (87) and Branden Spencer was close behind in 29th (90).
“Marshall was right in it until right at the end,” Shantz said. “He started off with two birdies, but got into some trouble on one home on the back nine. “I thought Garrett and Branden had pretty solid rounds, and they’re just a sophomore and a freshman.”
