Panthers tie for second in Atlantic tennis tourney

ATLANTIC — The Panthers came away with a second-place finish Wednesday in Atlantic, tying Lewis Central with 19 points. Clarinda was the tournament winner, scoring 30 points.

“Today was a great day for our girls to tie for second place at the Atlantic tournament,” coach Kevin Cooper said. “It was the first tournament for four of our girls, so it was nice to them to get to experience that.”

Creston’s No. 1 doubles team, senior Sasha Wurster and junior Hollynn Rieck, won two bouts to advance to the finals where they fell to Council Bluff Abraham Lincoln’s Tori Hansen and Lilly Bates.

In the first round, Wurster and Rieck defeated JV’s Brady Wagner and Ellie Butler 6-0, 6-1. They advanced to face Audubon’s senior duo of Grace Zaiger and Samantha Warnaca 6-0, 6-1. In the finals, they lost 6-2, 7-5.

In No. 1 singles, Creston senior Ava Adamson defeated athletes from Lewis Central and Atlantic on her way to the finals.

In round one, Adamson defeated senior McKenzie Morris of Lewis Central 6-3, 6-2. In round two she took down Atlantic’s Lily Willrich 6-1, 6-0. The finals were between Adamson and Clarinda senior Riley Nothwehr. Clarinda took the win 6-0 6-0, Adamson taking silver.

“Ava played very good today, she just faced a great opponent in the championship. She has the toughest job for us, playing number one night in and night out,” Cooper said. “She faces potential state qualifiers each night. I was so happy for her to get second place at this tournament.”

In No. 2 doubles, Creston freshmen Shaylee Coen and Marlee Stalker fell 6-1, 6-2 in round one to Harlan’s Rebekah Christensen and Catherine Fah. In the second round, the pair lost 6-1, 6-3 to Audubon’s Rachel Rynearson and Makenna Nichols. In the seventh-place match, Coen and Stalker defeated Abraham Lincoln’s Lexie Nelson and Rylan Stokes 4-6, 6-2,10-8.

Sophomore Kennedy Strider competed in No. 2 singles, placing sixth. She began with an 6-0, 6-0 loss to Clarinda senior Hannah Higgins. In the next round she defeated Taryn O’Brien 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the fifth-place match. There, she was topped by Audubon senior Alice Adams 6-0, 6-0.

The Panther girls return home Monday to host Clarinda.
