Panther girls shut out Chariton

9-0 win in home opener

Creston's Hollynn Rieck moves into position to return a shot during her 8-2 singles victory against Chariton. Rieck also teamed with Sasha Wurster for an 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles.

Creston’s undefeated girls tennis team sailed 9-0 over Chariton in their home opener Monday.

No. 1 singles player Ava Adamson and No. 6 freshman Marlee Stalker earned 8-0 singles shutouts, while Sasha Wurster cruised 8-1 at No. 2 singles. Adamson and Kennedy Strider won 8-1 in No. 2 doubles. Overall, Creston outscored Chariton 72-13 in match points in improving to 5-0 for the season.

“It was nice for the girls to finally get a home event tonight,” Creston coach Kevin Cooper said. “It was a great evening for tennis. I felt like we were more consistent tonight in a few areas, and we just need to keep working on getting better. It was great to get another win, and another night of game experience for some of our new players.”

At Chariton, Creston boys (1-4) fell 6-3 to the Chargers (4-7). Sophomore Dylan Dornack was the lone Panther singles winner at No. 6.

Creston went 2-1 in doubles play. The duo of Spencer Brown and Ben Rushing won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, while Carson Beer and Dornack prevailed 8-2 at No. 6.

“Tonight was a really close dual between our boys team and Chariton,” Cooper said. “There were four matches that could have gone either way, and they won them all. We have to get better at being consistent and resilient. A lot of our players will be back next year, and we are a work in progress. We’re working on being competitive and consistent late in matches.”

It continues to be a busy week for the Creston tennis teams. The girls play in the Atlantic Invitational Wednesday before hosting Audubon on Thursday.

The Panther boys play in a triangular at Ballard (Huxley) on Thursday, return home Friday against Clarke and play in the Atlantic Invitational on Saturday.
