It was not track-friendly weather Monday as the Creston hosted the Panther Invitational. While the girls came away with a resounding meet win, the boys narrowly fell to Mount Ayr. The Raiders scored 58 to the Panthers’ 52.
Boys
The Panther boys still managed to put together a good performance, winning eight gold medals.
Senior Brayden Schoon and sophomore Tom Mikkelsen continued their throwing dominance, taking silver and gold in both events.

Mikkelsen won the shot put with a mark of 52-08.5. At Chariton Tuesday, Mikkelsen topped the mark with a season-best throw of 54-03.5. The distance is the farthest by a Hawkeye 10 thrower this season and ranks seventh-best in Class 3A. In the discus, he threw 130-06, placing second.
Schoon won the discus with a new personal best throw of 160-01. The mark ranks him first in the Hawkeye 10 this season and fifth in Class 3A. He also threw a PR in shot put with a mark of 48-03.5, placing second.
The Panthers had four individual running events come away with gold, led by sophomore Wyatt Goodenberger. He took first in both the 800 and 1600-meter runs.
Goodenberger won the first race in 2:14.41 and finished the second in 5:32.20.
The 100m dash was won by junior Seth Gordon who posted a time of 11.31.

In the 400m hurdles, Tyler Riley came away with a first-place finish in 1:06.41.
Times were impacted by the strong wind.
Two Panther relays came out on top, the shuttle hurdle relay even running a new school record despite the unfavorable conditions.
The team, comprised of Durrell Haynes, Tyson Looney, Gavin Larson and Ryder Sharp, ran a 1:08.53, topping the time of 1:09.61 the quartet set four days prior at Nevada.
The sprint medley team of Looney, Sharp, Gordon and Riley won in a time of 1:45.09.
The Mount Ayr boys posted wins in six events. It began with a win in the Steve McDermott 4x800m relay. The team of Bryson Martin, Nathan Roemer, Brock Shaha and Tegan Hill ran a 9:46.94, topping the next team by more than a minute.
Garrett Walter won the 200m dash in 23.34 and Jackson Ruggles took first in the 400 with a time of 54.75.
In the long jump, Dyson Thompson leapt 21-00.25, a new personal best. The mark is the best in the Pride of Iowa and ranks ninth in Class 1A.
The Raiders also took first in the 4x100 and 4x400m relays.
The team of Drayden Thompson, Dyson Thompson, Trevin Victor and Ruggles finished the 4x100m in 46.33.
The team of Hill, Martin, Ruggles and Walter ran a 3:53.59 4x400.
Southwest Valley won the distance medley relay. Wyatt Shires, Alex Morgan, Uriah Westerhausen and Carson Cooper ran a 4:25.75, beating second-place Clarke by 20 seconds.
Girls
The Panther girls won their third invite of the season, scoring 178 points compared to Atlantic’s 120.
Creston won six individual running events and five relays. They placed second in two field events.
Freshman Cora Smith took first place in the 400m dash and 400m hurdles. She ran 1:06.67 and 1:14.58, respectively.

Sophomore Reese Strunk continued to dominate the distance races, running 5:39.39 in the 1500m and 12:34.49 in the 3000m, winning both.
Junior Kadley Bailey came away with a 200m dash win, running 27.78, a new personal best.
Senior Payton Davis rounded out individual winners for the girls, running a 2:40.42 in the 800

The girls won the 4x100, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relays.
The team of Maylee Riley, Karlie Kruse, Davis and Hope Henderson cruised to a win in the Steve McDermott 4x800m relay, running 11:04.69.
In the 4x100, the team of Karter Clayton, Braylee Pokorny, Bailey and Avery Staver ran 53.44.
The 4x400 team of Smith, Riley, Henley Shinn and Pokorny ran a 4:36.54.
Lastly, the winning DMR was comprised of Clayton, Kinzley Downing, Pokorny and Henderson. They ran 4:45.08.
In field events, Smith took second in the long jump with a distance of 15-04. Pokorny placed second in high jump behind state medalist Aubree Shields of Mount Ayr. Pokorny cleared 4-10 while Shields made 5-03.
Southwest Valley’s Mackenzie Richards threw 33-00 in shot put, finishing just two inches behind winning Branaya Jarmon of Thomas Jefferson.
The Panthers competed Thursday at Clarke. The boys return to action Monday at Lenox while both teams compete Thursday at Winterset. Drake Relay participants are announced Saturday.
