Panther track boys post second meet win this week

Creston senior Brandon Briley comes down the final stretch of the 1600m Tuesday in Chariton. Briley posted a win in both the 1600m and 3200m races and finished second in the 800m.

CHARITON -— Before this week, the Panthers boys track team hadn’t won a meet since 2003. Now they won two, back-to-back.

Tuesday, the boys headed to Chariton where they placed first in the 13-team field.

Their score of 127 narrowly beat out Davis County and Newton with 118 and 117, respectively.

The Panthers were led by senior Brandon Briley who had a heavy workload at the meet.

Briley posted wins in the 3200m, (10:29) 1600m (4:44) and came second in a close 800m race. Briley ran a 2:00.64, a season-best, but was topped by Ethan Stalzer of Albia who ran a 2:00.37.

The Panthers had 14 top-three events and 24 in the top eight.

Two relays placed first in addition to Briley’s individual wins.

The distance medley relay of Briley, Brayden Schoon, Weston Trapp and Austin Evans took a win with their time of 3:56.39.

The 4x100 team of Seth Gordon, Xander Drake, Schoon and Casen Dryden ran a :47.49 to take the win.

The Panthers found silver and bronze in both the shot put and discus.

Freshman Tom Mikkelsen threw a 49-03.75 for second place in shot put while senior Quinten Fuller took third with his mark of 44-07.5.

In discus, Fuller placed second with a throw of 127-05 while Schoon took third with 123-02.5.

Gordon ran a :11.86 to take third in the 100m dash while Tyler Riley placed third in the 400.

The sprint medley, 4x200 and 4x800 all placed third.

Thursday, the boys ran at the Clarke Goos Invite where five events placed first and the team tied for second with Chariton, coming in six points behind I-35.

Gordon won the 100m dash with a time of :11.6.

The 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800m relays all placed first.

Gordon, Evans, Trapp and Dryden ran the 4x100 in :49.83.

Briley, Riley, Wallace and Evans ran the 4x400 in 3:36.7 and the 4x800 in 8:47.52.

Mikkelsen won the shot put with 48-00.5

The Panthers return to action Thursday in Winterset.
