Panthers end season at regional

OSKALOOSA — Creston senior Mikaela Downing shot a career-best 18-hole round of 93 Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to crack a tough field of state qualifiers at the Class 3A regional golf meet held at Edmundson Golf Course.

Downing ended her Panther career shooting 49 on the front nine and 44 on the back for her 93. Teammates Kylie Metheny and Averi Culbertson shot 122 and 127, respectively.

Medalist was Kaylie Kelchen of Lisbon with a 77 and Pella’s Karsyn Lyons grabbed the final of six state qualifying spots at 86.

“Mikaela Downing ended her career with her best round she has shot, but was still seven strokes away from qualifying for the state tournament,” coach Steve Shantz said. “Both Averi Culbertson and Kylie Metheny had some great shots and putts but still were inconsistent. The girls had a fun year and we wish Mikaela the best and look forward to next year.”
