Glenwood takes two from Creston

GLENWOOD – Three Creston boys in scoring in double digits wasn’t enough as Glenwood escaped with a 74-72 win Tuesday.

After a 22 point first quarter for Creston, the offense was not as productive in the second scoring 15. At halftime, Creston had an 37-33 advantage. Glenwood also scored 15 points in the second.

The Rams’ third quarter ended up with 24 points taking over 57-56 going into the fourth.

Patrick Varner lead the Panthers with 19 points from 9-13 shooting from the field including 1-14 from the 3-point line. Cael Turner finished with 13 from 6-13 shooting including a 3-point shot. Kyle Strider scored 12. He was 3-13 from the field and 6-9 at the free throw line.

Varner was also team high with six rebounds. Jake Hoyt finished with five. Varner also had four assists to top the Panthers.

As a team, Creston finished shooting 28-58 from the field including 8-19 at the 3-point line. The Panthers made 8 of 11 free throws. Creston had 11 turnovers.

High scorer for Glenwood was Risto Lappala with 23. As a team, Glenwood finished 19-50 from the field and was 5-7 at the free throw line.

Creston is 8-5 and play Friday at Harlan.

GIRLS

Creston girls cut a double-digit deficit under 10 in the third quarter but it was as close as they could get as Glenwood won 52-43.

Glenwood (10-5) started the game strong with 25 points in the first quarter but cooled in the second. Creston was not able to trim the deficit in the first half trailing 34-21 at halftime. Creston scored 14 first-quarter points.

An 11-point Creston third quarter got the Panthers to trail less than 10 only giving up five points.

Doryn Paup was high scorer for Creston with 20 points from 8-20 shooting and 4-6 at the free throw line. Aleah Calvin and Ella Turner each finished with six. Four of Calvin’s points came from 4-7 free throw shooting. Turner made a field goal, 3-point shot and a free throw.

Paup also had 13 rebounds. Turner had eight rebounds and four steals. Calvin had six rebounds

Kadley Bailey and and Turner each had three assists.

Jenna Hopp scored 24 for Glenwood from 9-20 shooting. She also had 10 rebounds.

For team totals, Creston was 15-46 shooting including 4-9 from the 3-point line. The Panthers were 9-16 at the free throw line. Creston had 14 turnovers and outrebounded Glenwood 37-23. Glenwood finished 19-50 shooting including 9-27 at the 3-point line. The Rams were 5-7 at the free throw line.

Creston (4-12) plays Friday at Harlan.
