Lucy Scott sank 10 of 16 3-pointers in a 36-point night to lead the Lewis Central girls past Creston Friday night, 71-47.
Scott scored 16 points as the Titans established a 30-17 halftime lead. She sank three straight from behind the arc in a red-hot stretch in the third quarter and teammate Sydney Thien added another as Lewis Central held a commanding 56-28 lead going into the final period.
Doryn Paup, garnering a lot of attention from the Titans’ defense, finished with a hard-earned 16 points along with a game-high 14 rebounds and three assists. Her senior post partner Nevaeh Randall and freshman guard Kadley Bailey each scored nine points.
“We didn’t play that bad, but when studs play like studs, that’s what happens,” Creston coach Tony Neubauer said. “Scott had 10 of their 12 threes. We tried everything on her. I thought Keely did a nice job faceguarding her, but she’s just tough. We gave up two threes in transition and one on a kickout. They are a really good team when they shoot like that.”
Senior point guard Jacy Kralik had injured her elbow in a fall at Red Oak earlier in the week and she will be out indefinitely pending further medical evaluations. Freshman Ella Turner got the start as Coen switched from shooting guard to point guard.
“Keely slid over and did a nice job for us,” Neubauer said. “Ella got the start. She does a lot of different things for us. We worked Hollyn Rieck in a little bit. I thought Kadley Bailey had her best varsity game and Nevaeh gave us nine points. Jacy also missed six games last year with a dislocated finger. Hopefully in the long run it will make us a little deeper.”
Lewis Central improved to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the Hawkeye Ten. Creston fell to 4-8 and 3-3 before Tuesday’s 38-35 loss at Shenandoah. The Panthers host Carroll Kuemper Catholic at 6 p.m. Friday.
