Highway 34 takes eighth in Newton Cardinal Classic

Highway 34 girls wrestling (Creston, Lenox, East Union) hit the road Saturday for a round-robin tournament in Newton.

The home team took the win with 120 points, Creston coming in eighth in the 11-team field with 50 points.

“They have six-person brackets so we’re getting five matches each, and that’s what we need right now,” head coach Jacob Lister said before the meet. “It’s a matter of getting mat time and learning.”

At 110, Jaycee Fitzgerald placed third and scored 9 team points with her fall over Gretchen Wearmouth of Martensdale-St.Marys.

Grace Keeler placed third at 130.

Mila Kuhns, 135, placed second and scored 10 team points. She had a 15 second pin on Zoey Donehoo of Martensdale-St.Marys and a 58 second pin on Chloe Scarbrough of Valley West.

At 140, Zoey Vandevender placed third and scored 9 team points in a late fall over Claire Breuer of Newton.

Aubrie Mohr placed first and scored 18 team points at 170. She won by decision over Skylar Johansen of Martensdale-St.Marys and had pins on both Kelis Tawzer of Lewis Central and Grace Guy of Newton.

Friday, the girls travel to Riverside High School for another tournament.
