Distance medley, throwers shine at Lewis Central Coed

Panther boys finish 12th, girls 13th

COUNCIL BLUFFS — On another breezy and cold night Tuesday, Creston’s track and field teams took to the grounds in and around Titan Stadium.

Many Panthers took home personal records against a very stacked slew of schools.

“Ninety nine percent of everything we’ve done tonight has been pretty darn impressive,” head coach Clay Arnold said. “This is the biggest meet we’ll go to, other than state. Lots of 4A schools.”

The throwers had great success, despite wind gusts up to 30 mph, with many personal records (PRs) set.

“The throws tonight were awesome,” Arnold said. “Bri Fields PR’d by over two feet in the shot. Taylor Seaton, our other senior tonight threw over a two foot PR in the shot. Max Chapman, a sophomore, threw over two foot PR. I’ve never heard of three people doing that at the shot ever in my life, so that was exciting. Quinten Fuller PR’d in the discus and so did Fields.”

Chapman scored a point for Creston with an eighth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 42-09.50.

“What I’ve been working on this week to shot really paid off,” Chapman said. “I’ve been breaking that 40 mark plenty of times in practice and I finally was able to throw over the 40 mark this week. Any time I throw past 40 it’s just a visual thing, it’s a big milestone for me.”

Fields, who won a silver medal in the discus throw with a distance of 113-02 and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 35-03.75 had a good day despite it being a little chilly.

“A PR is a PR, even if it’s cold out,” Fields said.

On the track, there were also exciting things for those wearing Creston on their uniforms.

“The boys got second (Casen Dryden, Xander Drake, Brandon Briley and Austin Evans) in the distance medley out of the slow heat, that was really impressive,” Arnold said. “The 4x200 ran solid tonight, messed up one exchange but they ran pretty well.”

Sophomore Austin Evans has caught the attention of coach Arnold for his “great” running.

“Evans has been running great for us,” Arnold said. “He anchored that distance medley and ran second on the 4x800.”

“We’ve had a lot of season bests and personal bests,” Arnold said. “On the girls side, Fields ran a nice open 200, Doryn Paup got a PR in the 400 hurdles, some real nice things.”

On Thursday, the teams travel to the Carroll Invite, where they’ll encounter five Hawkeye 10 Conference foes, as well as Boone, Carroll (host), Gilbert, Greene County and Ogden.

“That’s always a good meet,” Arnold said. “We’ve taken the girls there for the last decade. This will be the first time the boys come with us. I’m really excited, especially with all the good things we did tonight and carry that over to Thursday when their competition will be a lot less 4A schools over so that should be exciting.”
