Creston wins Panther invite

Creston wrestling looked almost as strong as the winter weather Mother Nature brought to Union County on Saturday when they won their home invitational.

Christian Ahrens, Austin Evans and Briley Hayes were individual champions for Creston and from Coach Downing’s perspective it was a tournament in which the Panthers showed their tenacity.

“It’s too bad we didn’t have the field we anticipated coming into today,” Creston coach Cody Downing said. “We got pushed all day long and we fought hard.”

Ahrens notched an 8-3 victory over North Polk Comet Brandon Freeman to take home his first tournament win.

“First thing I saw was that I was the No. 2 seed, I didn’t like that,” Ahrens said. “It’s pretty nice to win for the first time, it’s a whole new experience not taking home second.”

Austin Evans pinned fellow Panther Owen Henderson in 2:29 for his first place win.

“Got the job done, that’s the main part,” Evans said. “It shows a lot about Creston, you got two kids in the finals at a tough tournament, shows that’s why we’re a good team.”

To expand on Evans’ comments on being a good team, Barncastle, Fuller, Chapman, Luther, Bolinger, Keeler and Parsons finished second place at the invitaitonal.

Briley Hayes got his first place result with a narrow 2-1 decision over Nolan Moore (Riverside, Oakland).

“It feels really good,” Hayes said of his result. “I started off my season a little slow this year, so this is my first tournament win. I hope to keep it going.”

Creston heads to Denison on Thursday for a double dual before taking part in the John J. Harris Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

“We wrestle Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so it’s a busy week,” Downing said. “We’ll get back in the right mindset and John J. Harris means a lot to our program and means a lot to the town we’ll be ready to go.”
