AFTON – It took 5:35 for the first points to be scored, but once Kaylin Lack connected on a traditional 3-point play, the Eagles found their groove and won 44-13 against Moravia Thursday night.
From the four minute remaining mark in the second quarter to the seven minute remaining mark in the fourth quarter, East Union (2-5) held Moravia scoreless.
According to Varsity Bound, this is the first time all season that Moravia (0-7) has been held scoreless in a quarter.
“We really wanted to concentrate on being patient on offense,” first year East Union coach Todd Verwers said. “We also went from a traditional man-to-man to a trap the second half.”
Kaylin Lack led the Eagles with a game high 22 points.
“She’s just a gamer,” Verwers said. “Good finisher and a better outside shooter than a lot of people would think, she’s very well poised and one of our team leaders.”
The Eagles lead 17-8 at halftime and finished the game on a 27-5 run.
With the game getting out of hand early for the Lady Mohawks, coach Verwers had a chance for his Eagle bench to play good minutes.
“Very pleased with the bench,” Verwers said. a lot of those girls haven’t got a lot of playing time but they actually ran the offense and when we were in a trapping defense they had some responsibilities and did a good job of paying attention to the details we talked about.”
UP NEXT — Lamoni heads to Afton on Jan. 3, 2022. The Demons are currently 6-1 and play Diagonal tonight. Lamoni defeated Moravia 64-24 early in the season.
